Episode 5 recap: Chu Bufan's wooden pendant raised suspicions.
Lord Xiao arrived late and witnessed his son's death in front of him, feeling powerless to do anything. He was in great pain and ordered the scene to be sealed off, with everyone instructed to find the true culprit behind his son's murder. Everyone was in a panic, claiming they had no motive to harm Yu Jie. During that time, someone noticed that Qi Ming was missing. Lord Xiao suppressed his anger and prevented Ding Zhaozhao from getting involved in the case.
Ding Zhaozhao believed that the connection between these two cases involved burning at the stake and tongue punishment, related to the Mud Plow. She was about to go out and investigate when Lord Xiao stopped her. It was clear that Lord Xiao did not want Ding Zhaozhao to be involved in the case. Ding Zhaozhao was confused as to why she could help Lord Xiao find the true culprit, but Lord Xiao did not believe in her abilities.
When Ding Zhaozhao was about to leave, her father blocked her path. She told her father that she must get to the bottom of the matter. Ding's father, upon hearing his daughter's concern for him and her well-being, saw how hard she worked as a constable. Ding's father noticed that Mu Pei questioned Ding Zhaozhao, and Ding Zhaozhao pretended to be vague and deceived her father. Ding's father knew that Mu Pei was not ordinary and ordered his subordinates to investigate.
Wen Sihang came to find Ding Zhaozhao but was informed by his uncle that she was unwell and resting, so he left. Chu Bufan secretly sneaked into Ding Zhaozhao's room. Ding Zhaozhao complained that Lord Xiao did not allow her to get involved in the matter, so she could only investigate secretly. In order to learn the art of disguise, Ding Zhaozhao massaged Chu Bufan.
