Episode 7 recap: Zhao You Nan investigated the paper mill collaboration between Huang Zong Wei and Chen Chang.
Chen Chang caught Huang Zong Wei and first threatened him, then made him go to the laboratory to develop crystal meth. He warned him that if his skills were not up to par, he would be left there to die. Chen Chang's former technician, named Adi, was reluctant when he saw Huang Zong Wei trying to encroach on his territory.
Huang Zong Wei put on a new protective suit and entered the laboratory, insisting that Chen Chang respect his patent and not just watch from the sidelines. After waiting for a long time, Huang Zong Wei emerged from the lab with the developed crystal meth. Chen Chang instructed A Sheng to test it first, and after trying it, A Sheng found the purity and quality of the crystal meth to be very high.
Chen Chang was ecstatic upon hearing this. The Guangning City Public Security Bureau held a case seminar, where Zhao You Nan proposed starting the investigation from the newspapers. However, the leaders of the Guangning Public Security Bureau believed that it was merely her intuition and lacked evidence to be a valid direction for the investigation. Zhao You Nan was unsatisfied and stormed out of the meeting room. Duan Ming Hong hurriedly followed her and advised her not to act impulsively, emphasizing that leaders have a broader vision and can mobilize more resources, making coordination of power and resources more convenient.
Zhao You Nan remained unconvinced and sarcastically remarked that Duan Ming Hong could go and be a political commissar or an instructor. Zhao You Nan wanted to go to the women's restroom, so Duan Ming Hong had no choice but to wait outside the restroom door for her. After waiting for a while without seeing her come out, he had a female comrade go in to check, only to find that Zhao You Nan had already escaped through the restroom window.
Zhao You Nan arrived at the newsstand and noticed that the newspapers there were different from the ones she had brought from the KTV. The newsstand owner said that they might not have been printed by the same printing factory. Zhao You Nan inquired and found out that there were two printing factories involved in producing that particular newspaper. Huang Zong Wei continued his research on crystal meth, and upon seeing his remarkable skills, Chen Chang realized that he had encountered a lucky star.
Chen Chang invited Huang Zong Wei to a feast featuring whole fish, claiming that all the fish were caught by his wife's family and were exceptionally fresh.
Chen Chang didn't understand why Huang Zong Wei didn't choose to find a well-established factory and instead opted to produce on a boat. Huang Zong Wei explained that having a factory wouldn't be useful. His own factory was even larger than Chen Chang's, but whenever there was a problem, the entire operation would be compromised. By choosing to work on a boat and disposing of the waste directly into the river, they could avoid detection. If any issues arose, they could easily destroy all the evidence.
Impressed by this explanation, Chen Chang realized that Huang Zong Wei was not just a technician but a brilliant strategist. Huang Zong Wei humbly responded that if he were Zhuge Liang (a famous strategist from Chinese history), then Chen Chang would be Liu Bei (a prominent warlord). He congratulated Chen Chang on the imminent fortune they were about to make, and Chen Chang replied that both of them would become wealthy.
Huang Zong Wei asked Chen Chang seriously if he truly intended to cooperate with him. Chen Chang affirmed his commitment, saying he wanted to cooperate for a lifetime. Huang Zong Wei pointed out that the production capacity of a single boat was limited and couldn't reach a large scale. However, Chen Chang assured him that he had already considered this issue. His wife's family had secured a large water area for their use, allowing them access to numerous boats. To demonstrate, Chen Chang opened the window and showed Huang Zong Wei the densely packed boats on the water's surface, leaving Huang Zong Wei in awe.
However, Huang Zong Wei proposed two conditions that Chen Chang had to agree to if they were to collaborate. Chen Chang eagerly agreed and urged him to state the conditions. Huang Zong Wei explained that one metric ton would be worth five billion yuan, which couldn't be done within China due to the unwavering determination of the domestic police. If Chen Chang didn't agree, it would be better to kill him.
Fearing for his life, Chen Chang quickly promised to seek sales channels overseas. Huang Zong Wei also asked for Chen Chang's help in finding A Long, to which Chen Chang readily agreed. At that moment, A Long came to find Xiao Hong, who cooked him egg noodles. A Long was grateful, and Xiao Hong asked him to protect her. A Long abruptly pushed her onto the bed.
Zhao You Nan arrived alone at the printing factory to conduct her investigation. Duan Ming Hong, worried about her safety, followed shortly after and pretended to discuss business with the boss, providing cover for Zhao You Nan's investigation.
