Episode 2 recap: Luo Xiang Qian, to save Professor Tian Jian from injury, the Vanguard Company participated in the construction of the Chengyu Railway.
General Ma brought Luo Xiang Qian to meet Director Zhao Guoliang to report on the progress of the espionage case. Zhao Guoliang was pleased to see Luo Xiang Qian and commended him for protecting the steel plant and for his timely actions in ensuring the safety and evacuation of experts and scholars at the church. At that moment, Sha Menghai arrived with Ye Lan. Ye Lan was pleasantly surprised to see Luo Xiang Qian here, as she had been looking for him in many places. Ye Lan expressed her gratitude to Luo Xiang Qian for saving her at the church, and Luo Xiang Qian humbly replied that it was his duty to do so.
Ye Lan hesitantly pointed at his arm and asked how it was doing, but Luo Xiang Qian casually said it had already healed. Zhao Guoliang invited everyone to sit down and explained to Ye Lan the importance of Professor Tian Jian's involvement in the construction of the Chengyu Railway. He asked Ye Lan to find a way to persuade Professor Tian to come forward, no matter what.
As Professor Tian Jian's favorite student, Ye Lan understood his temperament well and realized that it would be difficult to convince him to participate. However, she expressed her willingness to give it a try. Zhao Guoliang instructed Luo Xiang Qian that the enemy agents in Chongqing had been causing trouble, and the Vanguard Company must strengthen the protection of experts and scholars like Professor Tian Jian.
After agreeing, Luo Xiang Qian, accompanied by the communication officer Shi Tou, escorted Ye Lan to Professor Tian Jian's house. Little did they know that two spies were following closely behind them. Ye Lan arrived at Professor Tian Jian's house with familiarity, and the nanny Xiao Yu opened the door. Professor Tian Jian came out from inside and greeted them. He also expressed concern and inquired about the attack on Ye Lan by the spies at the church during the engagement. Upon learning that it was Luo Xiang Qian who had protected Ye Lan, he repeatedly thanked him.
However, when Luo Xiang Qian mentioned the Chengyu Railway, Professor Tian Jian interrupted him. Ye Lan didn't understand why the professor was resistant to the Chengyu Railway project. With a heavy heart, Professor Tian Jian said that there was no greater sorrow than a dead heart. He had already made a vow in front of his wife's grave that he would never participate in any work related to the Chengyu Railway in this lifetime.
Ye Lan knew that when the professor was working at the construction site years ago, his wife died due to complications from childbirth, which was an everlasting pain in his heart. Therefore, at that moment, she didn't know how to persuade him.
While everyone was talking, Shi Tou noticed keenly that a spy was aiming a gun at Professor Tian Jian from the wall in the courtyard. In a crisis situation, Shi Tou threw himself in front of Tian Jian, using his own body to shield the professor. The bullet penetrated Shi Tou's chest. Luo Xiang Qian quickly realized the situation and counterattacked, shooting and killing one spy. However, another spy lunged at him, shooting him in the knee. Despite the pain, Luo Xiang Qian managed to kill the second spy, but Shi Tou was critically injured. In a state of emergency, Luo Xiang Qian urgently carried Shi Tou and took him to the hospital for treatment.
The scene deeply shocked Tian Jian. He didn't expect the spies to be so ruthless, nor did he expect the People's Liberation Army to sacrifice their lives to save him. Witnessing the deaths and injuries of the soldiers who sacrificed themselves for him, Tian Jian immediately decided to participate in the construction of the Chengyu Railway. He brought the information he had accumulated over the years and went to find Zhao Guoliang, receiving a warm welcome from everyone.
Luo Xiang Qian suffered a shattered knee, while Shi Tou closed his eyes forever. His dying wish was to sit on a train and go home to see his mother. Overwhelmed with grief, Luo Xiang Qian resolved to return to the army after recovering from his injuries and eliminate the spies to avenge Shi Tou. General Ma conveyed the superior's orders, and their unit was transformed into an engineering corps, joining the construction of the Chengyu Railway.
Everyone struggled to accept the situation, especially Luo Xiang Qian, who couldn't comprehend it. He believed that their Vanguard Company was a combat unit, and how could they put down their guns and pick up hammers? Zhang Biao and his brothers were even more perplexed. They had joined the Liberation Army to carry guns, fight, and receive rations. Now they were being asked to do manual labor. How could they accept it? After careful consideration, Zhang Biao and his two best brothers left the unit. When Luo Xiang Qian learned about this at the hospital, he became extremely anxious. He borrowed a car from Tian Jian, who was visiting him, and chased after them. Zhang Biao and his brothers couldn't outrun Luo Xiang Qian's car. After intercepting them, Luo Xiang Qian scolded them harshly and repeated the words that Instructor Wu Qiang had taught him.
After Zhang Biao and his brothers were brought back, they were filled with anxiety, fearing that they would be executed for desertion.
