Episode 1 recap: Tragic Fate of the Substitute Crown Princess.
The story begins on a snowy day, with soldiers resting in the military camp at night. At this time, a soldier brings three elegantly dressed women to see the Crown Prince, claiming to offer precious treasures as a peace offering. The Crown Prince comes out of his tent and instructs the three women to raise their heads. With a single command, the Crown Prince orders the soldiers to silence the women. However, the women are not easy targets and are prepared. They immediately kill the soldiers around them.
Soon, cloaked figures hidden in the shadows also arrive. But the Crown Prince is not afraid. He kills all the visiting cloaked figures and the three women. A torch is thrown towards the Crown Prince, but he is prepared and shoots it down in mid-air. He has already made up his mind to cleanse the East Shadow. As the leader of the East Shadow, Yue Jian (played by Xu Zhenzhen) sees two subordinates returning dejectedly and informing her of the failed assassination. She immediately kills both of them on the spot. Since her subordinates cannot eliminate the Crown Prince, keeping them alive is useless, so she deals with them and swears that she will soon meet the Crown Prince.
During this time, there have been constant attempts on the Crown Prince's life, and the Emperor has ordered him to return and marry as soon as possible. Three days later, on the day of the Crown Prince's wedding, Yue Jian has prepared the bridal sedan in order to carry out the assassination during the wedding. The sedan stops as soon as it arrives at the Crown Prince's residence. Just when Yue Jian is fully prepared, her subordinate informs her of the unfortunate death of the Crown Prince, and requests her to be buried with him. This move is indeed ruthless. Yue Jian starts pretending to be pitiful and weak. At the moment, she cannot resist too much, so she deliberately acts weak. However, her subordinate is not fooled and immediately brings out Bai Ling, poisoned wine, and a dagger, asking her to choose her own fate.
Yue Jian picks up the poisoned wine, but as soon as it reaches her nose, she makes a disgusted expression. She then says that she cannot die because she is already pregnant with the Crown Prince's child.
