Episode 5 recap: Wu Geng gradually adapted to the life of a slave.
During mealtime, Wu Geng, Bai Cai, Jiang Shang, and Shi Tou rushed forward to grab steamed buns. However, they were obstructed by Lao Cai, who refused to let them eat. Wu Geng once again clashed with Lao Cai, and Bai Cai was injured while shielding Wu Geng from a whip. The group labored in the mine without seeing daylight, and Bai Cai even dug up a lot of bloodstones due to her special ability to sense them.
However, the whip wound that Bai Cai suffered while protecting Wu Geng worsened over time. The centurion intentionally made things difficult for Bai Cai, Wu Geng, and the others, using the excuse of their insufficient collection of bloodstones to deny them food. Wu Geng knew that the centurion was deliberately causing trouble for everyone because of his own connections. He stated that he could go without food, but the people around him had to eat. He sarcastically referred to the centurion as a lapdog of the Protoss, fawning and begging for mercy.
This enraged the centurion, who ordered his subordinates to beat Wu Geng. Bai Cai, feeling sorry for Wu Geng, shielded him and ended up getting injured herself. In order to prevent Bai Cai from being further implicated, Wu Geng could only swallow his anger. During the break time, in order to avoid being secretly harassed, Bai Cai could only rest together with Wu Geng.
That night, the official who coveted Bai Cai secretly came to their dwelling. Wu Geng noticed their presence and immediately confronted them. Later that night, Bai Cai warned Wu Geng not to confront the centurion anymore. They were now in someone else's territory, and if they insisted on a confrontation, it would only bring harm to them. Bai Cai persuaded Wu Geng that the only hope they had was to stay alive. Thinking of the words his parents said before they passed away, Wu Geng made up his mind to live well and seek a future path.
The next day, during mealtime, Wu Geng noticed an elderly man in the mine who was seriously ill. He willingly gave the stolen food to the old man, but the old man refused his kindness and instead expressed concern for Wu Geng's injuries from the previous day. Wu Geng was moved that he had encountered a companion in the mine who cared for others. The old man revealed that he cared for Wu Geng because he resembled a young man he once knew.
It turned out that a young man named Xin Wang had also worked in the Beishan mine before. At that time, Xin Wang had helped the old man and had vowed in the mine to one day defeat the Protoss and end the suffering of the human race. The old man also told Wu Geng that the young man he knew back then had managed to escape from the Beishan mine, and if Wu Geng had the determination, he could do the same.
When the old man fell ill, Wu Geng asked Bai Cai and the others to take care of him while he went to find the centurion and seek a doctor. The old man entrusted the bird "Xiao Ling," whom he had rescued from the mine years ago, to Bai Cai's care. The centurion and his men arrived to take the old man away, and Wu Geng, worried about the old man, followed them secretly. To his horror, Wu Geng saw the centurion's men throw the gravely ill old man off a suspension bridge.
Wu Geng accused the centurion of openly killing someone, but he was then attacked by the centurion's men. Wu Geng took advantage of the situation and threatened to hang the centurion from the bridge, forcing the centurion to fully admit his mistake.
Wu Geng told Bai Cai and Shi Tou about the incident where the old man was thrown off the suspension bridge. They all realized that there were no doctors in the mine, and the slaves were not allowed to get sick.
The next day, Bai Cai's illness flared up, and Wu Geng realized that it was because Bai Cai had been beaten while protecting him. He discreetly asked the other slaves if there was a doctor in the mine. The centurion noticed that Wu Geng and Bai Cai were not collecting bloodstones and questioned Xiao Shang and Shi Tou. However, other slaves informed them that Bai Cai was sick, and they were not working that day.
The centurion arrived with his men, intending to throw the sick Bai Cai into a pit of rocks to fend for herself. Wu Geng carried Bai Cai on his back and escaped in the mine. They found a hiding spot at the entrance of a cave that could conceal their presence, avoiding detection by the centurion. Just when Wu Geng didn't know how to treat Bai Cai, the old man who had been thrown off the suspension bridge appeared before them.
Wu Geng only wanted to save Bai Cai, and he agreed to do anything the old man asked, regardless of the task. The old man handed a medicine to Wu Geng and instructed him to give Bai Cai one pill per day. The old man was surprised that the prince Wu Geng would humble himself and seek help for a slave. Sensing that his identity had been exposed, the old man asked about Wu Geng's identity, but he didn't reveal his true identity. He only told Wu Geng that he had come for him and informed him that Xin Wang had also lived and worked with the slaves in the mine years ago, promising to fight for the freedom of the human race.
The old man instructed Wu Geng to stay in the mine and be a competent slave because without experiencing the hardships of the mortal world, one cannot understand true righteousness. As a gift, the old man gave Wu Geng the fire for making wontons before immediately disappearing. The centurion, angered by Wu Geng and Bai Cai's escape, made things difficult for Xiao Shang and Shi Tou. However, Wu Geng and Bai Cai appeared before them, and the centurion threatened them to collect enough bloodstones for the day or face consequences.
Wu Geng asked Bai Cai to rest first while he helped her collect the required amount of bloodstones. Xiao Shang and Shi Tou willingly stayed to assist. After Bai Cai rested, she also joined in helping. Although she didn't have the strength to work, she used her ability to successfully locate the places where bloodstones were present. Everyone was amazed by Bai Cai's ability to find bloodstones.
In the following days, the four of them cooperated to collect bloodstones, and time passed day by day. One of the slaves who had previously stolen Wu Geng's food fell ill, and the amount of bloodstones collected that day was not enough. Wu Geng voluntarily shared some of his bloodstones with the person, saving them from the centurion's harassment.
