Episode 22 recap: Yu Dekai wants to tell the truth to Ma Zhuo and Xia Ze.
With a serious expression, Yu Dekai gets out of the car and asks his assistant to light a cigarette for him. He instructs the assistant to leave and not to bother him, as he is feeling heavy-hearted. He visits the place where Ma Zhuo and Xia Ze used to live when they were children and looks around. Ma Zhuo and Xia Ze arrive, and Yu Dekai tells them about an encounter he had with a high monk while studying in the United States.
The monk had locked himself in a wooden barrel without eating or drinking until death, believing that this would bring blessings to the villagers. However, the monk only felt fear and despair in the cramped darkness, and he was afraid of death. At the same time, the gate to enlightenment was closed. The monk's resentment turned into vengeful spirits, bringing destruction to the surrounding people.
Xia Ze realizes that Yu Dekai is beating around the bush and urges him to speak directly. Yu Dekai recalls the difficulties his family faced in Linjiang in 1983 and how Xia Gang helped him and enabled him to go to school. Jasmine, Yu Dekai's good friend, was also involved in their relationship. Chen Guoguo came to see Yu Dekai, and upon seeing someone with him, Chen Guoguo voluntarily proposed to break up and left in disappointment. Jasmine and Yu Dekai got married and received support from Jasmine's father. However, Jasmine also had her own concerns. Yu Dekai encountered Chen Guoguo again, who was married and had a child. Yu Dekai helped her secure a job as a hotel manager and introduced her to Xia Gang. Yu Dekai wanted to tell his father-in-law that he wanted to help the villagers, but his father-in-law rejected the idea.
Xia Gang and Chen Guoguo come to meet Yu Dekai. Yu Dekai tells them that he has nothing left as his father-in-law has taken away all his power. He expresses his loneliness and asks these two friends to help him secretly transfer money from his father-in-law's control to his own company so that he can have the power to help those who have helped him before and not be under someone else's control. Chen Guoguo, Yu Dekai, and Xia Gang quickly reach an agreement and establish a company secretly. Yu Dekai gives money to Chen Guoguo and Xia Gang from the funds.
Jasmine is furious that Yu Dekai is helping Chen Guoguo, and it makes her lose face in front of the entire resort. Yu Dekai tells Jasmine that there is nothing between him and Chen Guoguo, but he dislikes his father-in-law's constant control and wants to break free from it. After hearing Yu Dekai's explanation, Jasmine feels somewhat comforted and decides to trust her husband. However, to Jasmine's surprise, during a gathering, she catches Xiaohua stealing money. Jasmine wants to take this opportunity to drive Chen Guoguo out of Linjiang.
Yu Dekai has always wanted to be a peacemaker and asks Jasmine to spare Xiaohua. Xia Gang, seeing his daughter being unjustly treated and looked down upon wherever she goes, feels heartbroken and decides to give up cooperating with Yu Dekai. Xia Gang, who is Yu Dekai's trusted assistant, tries his best to persuade him to stay, even asking Chen Guoguo to convince Xia Gang to stay. When Chen Guoguo persuades Xia Gang, he suggests leaving the place together, but Chen Guoguo is unwilling, stating that she has experienced enough poverty and does not want to live without money again. Chen Guoguo convinces Xia Gang to stay.
While Chen Guoguo accompanies Xia Gang to relax, she makes a hidden knife. Chen Guoguo promises to marry Xia Gang in that village, which makes Xia Gang very happy. Xia Gang also promises to buy a big house for Chen Guoguo and treat Ma Zhuo well. He trusts Chen Guoguo completely. Yu Dekai is called by his father-in-law, who knows about the resort that Chen Guoguo and Xia Gang built and the fraudulent accounting. He knows that Yu Dekai has played a significant role in supporting them. The father-in-law angrily demands that Yu Dekai resolve the issue quickly, or else he can ruin Yu Dekai as well. These words put a lot of pressure on Yu Dekai, and as soon as his father-in-law leaves, Yu Dekai's face becomes visibly strained.
