Episode 22 recap: Luo Yuan Confesses, Xia Wei Dong Solidifies the Relationship

In this episode, despite Luo Yuan being unable to further participate in the ongoing case due to certain circumstances, he remains steadfast in his belief that his previous efforts will not be in vain, as the evidence is conclusive and justice will ultimately prevail. Qu He Ping, understanding Luo Yuan's disappointment, personally speaks with him to encourage him to maintain his resolve and composure as a judge.

Qu He Ping assures Luo Yuan that he will preside over the trial personally to ensure a fair hearing. He advises Luo Yuan to maintain a positive mindset and not be distracted by external conspiracies.

The environmental court ultimately rules on the pollution case, considering the fact that Jin Meng Water Services had proactively paid a portion of the ecological damage compensation. The court sentences Jin Meng Water Services to a 50 million yuan fine, Hu Zhao Yu to 6 years in prison, and imposes corresponding punishments on Zheng Wei and other involved parties.

Tan Yun personally visits Hu Zhao Yu in the detention center, and despite their collaboration now being over, Hu Zhao Yu believes they will cross paths again in the future.

Whether Xia Wei Dong will continue to serve as an environmental court consultant becomes a focus of attention. Su Zhuo believes Xia Wei Dong's departure may not be a bad thing, as it could present her with new opportunities and challenges. Ning Ni, on the other hand, thinks Xia Wei Dong's job is stable, and she's unlikely to easily accept a new offer unless she plans to continue investigating the Xiang Fa Group.

Since reuniting with Yan Ming, Xia Wei Dong's emotions have been somewhat low. Reflecting on her painful past experiences, Xia Wei Dong begins to contemplate her future. The harm Yan Ming had caused her leaves Xia Wei Dong deeply anguished, and she decides to leave the environmental court to seek a new direction in life. Upon learning of her daughter's decision, Xia's mother is shocked, but Xia Wei Dong has made up her mind and leaves without telling anyone.

Luo Yuan, unable to reach Xia Wei Dong, is deeply concerned. He rushes to the repair shop to meet Xia's mother and Xia Xiao Jiang, learning about Yan Ming's actions towards Xia Wei Dong. Xia Xiao Jiang suspects Xia Wei Dong may have gone to the Red-crowned Crane Protection Area, and Luo Yuan unhesitatingly sets out there in the middle of the night. However, on the way, he encounters a group of deer poachers and bravely steps in to stop them, only to be attacked in return.

The Episode Review

"Above the Rivers" continues its engaging legal drama in Episode 22, as the show tackles environmental corruption and the personal struggles of its lead characters. The episode delivers a satisfying resolution to the pollution case, with the court handing down significant punishments to the responsible parties. However, the real emotional heart of the episode lies in Xia Wei Dong's decision to leave the environmental court behind.

Xia Wei Dong's internal conflict over her painful past with Yan Ming is palpably rendered, as she grapples with the desire for a fresh start. The show handles this character arc with nuance, avoiding melodrama and allowing the audience to empathize with Xia's difficult choice. Luo Yuan's growing concern for Xia's wellbeing adds another layer of drama, setting the stage for potential future developments.

The episode maintains the series' strong pacing, balancing the resolution of the pollution case with the more character-driven storylines. While the legal elements remain engaging, it is the personal journeys of the protagonists that truly captivate in this installment. "Above the Rivers" continues to deliver a well-crafted blend of social commentary and interpersonal drama.
