Episode 23 recap: The Suspect Reminds Luo Yuan of Yuan Xiaoxiao

In the Environmental Protection Tribunal of River Bay County, Judge Mo Li is dealing with a tricky case involving a young man named Gu Yu. Gu Yu had dropped out of school due to campus bullying in the past and now lives with his mother, spending his days at home caring for various reptiles. Mo Li is concerned that Gu Yu's physical condition may not be suitable for imprisonment, but the case is complex, and she is unsure how to proceed.

Luo Yuan decides to visit Gu Yu's home personally. There, he finds Gu Yu's mother angrily scolding her son, worried about his future. Gu Yu remains silent and retreats to his room. Suddenly, he grabs one of his pet turtles and violently smashes the fish tank, using the broken glass to slash his own wrists. Gu Yu's mother, while on the phone with the court, tries to open the door but faints upon seeing her son's bloodied hands.

Fortunately, Gu Yu is rushed to the hospital and his life is not in danger. Seeing the house filled with reptiles, Luo Yuan is reminded of Yuan Xiaoxiao. Mo Li is distressed, even considering resigning, but Luo Yuan tells her that the goal is not just judgment, but to help Gu Yu overcome his challenges.

Meanwhile, a cargo ship called Virgo from Country B has docked at the Lingjiang Pier. The ship is carrying chemicals, and Ma Weizhong and Fu Jia'an from the Water Bureau suspect the nearby sewage may be related to a phenol leak from the ship. They attempt to board the ship for inspection but are refused.

Jiang Dan finds the case involving foreign affairs to be difficult. The Country B Chamber of Commerce has protested the judicial system's interference with international trade, and the Deputy Mayor personally comes to the court to discuss the matter with Qu Heping and Geng Nian. He is concerned about the impact on the two countries' relations and the investment and production of the Country B company in Lingjiang City.

Geng Nian explains the situation in detail, but although the Deputy Mayor expresses understanding, his attitude leaves everyone feeling that the situation has become even more troublesome.

The Episode Review

"Above the Rivers" Episode 23 tackles complex social issues with depth and nuance. The case of the troubled youth Gu Yu highlights the challenges faced by those struggling with mental health and social isolation, and the episode examines the legal system's role in addressing such delicate situations.

The parallel storyline involving the cargo ship from a foreign country adds an international dimension, showcasing the diplomatic tensions that can arise when environmental concerns clash with economic interests. The episode does an excellent job of presenting multiple perspectives without taking a heavy-handed stance, allowing the viewer to engage with the moral ambiguities.

Strong performances by the cast, particularly in the emotionally charged scenes between Gu Yu and his mother, ground the episode in raw human drama. The writing avoids simplistic resolutions, instead posing thoughtful questions about the role of the justice system in rehabilitating, rather than just punishing, troubled individuals.
