Episode 20 recap: Yang Cai Wei learned about the Ghost Fire Case.
Initially, the Princess was interested in Pan Yue, but Pan Yue directly rejected her, stating that he was already engaged. The Princess didn't take it seriously at the time, thinking that with just a word from her, Pan Yue and Yang Cai Wei's engagement would be nullified, not to mention that Yang Cai Wei had been missing for ten years. However, Pan Yue's determination remained firm.
Later, Pan Yue was imprisoned, and the Princess decided to help him, claiming that she would only marry him. Pan Yue's task was to uncover the truth and eliminate traitors for the country. Yang Cai Wei breathed a sigh of relief, unaware of the dangers Pan Yue faced after returning to the capital. But with Pan Yue's explanations, could it be that he had developed genuine feelings for Shang Guan Zhi? Yang Cai Wei's mood worsened.
Subsequently, Pan Yue's tenderness and thoughtfulness towards her were overshadowed by Yang Cai Wei's jealousy, to the point where his temper became somewhat bad. The three of them heard about Shen Ci's home, and it was said that there was no one there anymore, and the place was not auspicious. Pan Yue and Yang Cai Wei went to investigate Shen Ci's home, which was in ruins and hadn't been inhabited for a long time. Yang Cai Wei noticed duplicate sets of children's toys. Could Shen Ci have a twin brother? After inquiring, it was revealed that Shen Ci indeed had a twin brother named Shen Yan, but he was very peculiar from a young age. He was blind and had a strange personality, and he could attract strange insects. Shen Yan lived alone in the woodshed and rarely interacted with people.
However, one day, Shen Yan's poisonous insects killed their parents. Since then, Shen Ci left Heyang and vowed never to return. Pan Yue and Yang Cai Wei speculated that Shen Yan had left with Shen Ci initially and took his place to seek revenge after Shen Ci was killed.
Back at the county government office, Shen Yan didn't deny his identity, but he said that their speculations were not the truth. He offered to disclose what he knew about the Water Ripple organization, but his only request was to kill Chen Fu. Yang Cai Wei was wholeheartedly focused on the case, and Pan Yue, considering that she had been roughing it for the past few days, specially prepared a lot of food for her. However, Yang Cai Wei ran away because of his attitude.
Pan Yue was extremely frustrated by this. After deep contemplation, he realized that Yang Cai Wei didn't come to the wedding of her own accord. She might have considered him the culprit who killed her. Could it be that she truly disliked him? Zuo Lanjiang brought a message, saying that he would investigate the matter of the Silver Rain Tower and asked Yang Cai Wei not to worry.
Zuo Lanjiang discovered a medicine in Sun Zhen's room that had the ability to regenerate flesh and skin, which he found unusual. He immediately sent someone to invite Bai Xiaosheng to meet by the river. Bai Xiaosheng received the invitation with a heart full of anticipation and quickly closed up shop. She returned home and carefully dressed herself, no longer disguising herself as a man as she had done in the past, but instead wearing gentle and elegant women's clothing.
Zuo Lanjiang smiled when he saw her like this, and asked her to help keep an eye on the Jade Toad in the Ghost Market. He even instinctively put his arm around Bai Xiaosheng's shoulder. However, they both felt uncomfortable once they realized what they were doing. Yang Cai Wei found records about the Illusory Twilight Insect and hurriedly went with Pan Yue to neutralize Chen Fu's poison. While waiting, Yang Cai Wei said she wanted to walk ahead, which made Pan Yue even more frustrated. It seemed that she didn't want to be with him.
Yang Cai Wei was knocked unconscious and locked up, only to wake up and find himself surrounded by students from Xinzheng Academy. These impoverished students had been bullied and mistreated by Chen Fu and his group, but they were too afraid to speak up as Chen Fu had the protection of the academy's dean. Now that Yang Cai Wei was trying to save Chen Fu, they were afraid of returning to their days of being treated like pigs and dogs.
Back in Chen Fu's room, Yang Cai Wei was hesitant and unsure whether she should save him or not. In the end, she administered a needle to Chen Fu, bringing him back to consciousness. As soon as he woke up, Chen Fu accused Shen Ci of causing harm to him. Afterwards, Yang Cai Wei told Pan Yue about the incident, never imagining that the person she had gone through so much trouble to save would be such a malicious individual.
Today, Shen Ci was put on trial, and Yang Cai Wei tried to persuade the students to testify, but they were unwilling to get involved. Chen Fu accused Shen Yan in front of the court, and Shen Yan didn't defend himself. Yang Cai Wei stepped forward to accuse Chen Fu and presented a booklet written by Chen Fu himself, which documented all of his actions.
There was no "Trial of Daring" at all. It was Chen Fu and his two companions who forcefully took Shen Ci to the Ghost Forest. Unexpectedly, Shen Ci was strangled by vines. Chen Fu and his son naturally denied their involvement, but the students from Xinzheng Academy arrived to testify against them. Chen Fu thought the person in front of him was Shen Ci and thought that he could settle the matter by paying some medical expenses. However, Pan Yue had brought Shen Ci's remains, and it turned out that the person they thought was Shen Ci was actually his younger brother.
Shen Ci had taken care of his younger brother since they were young, until the younger brother caused a great catastrophe. Shen Ci left Heyang, and Shen Yan secretly followed him. But they never expected that such a kind-hearted brother would be killed. So Shen Yan took on Shen Ci's identity and manipulated their perception, making them blind and leading them to jump off a cliff. Chen Fu and his son were shocked, and Pan Yue ordered Chen Fu to be exiled to the border while Shen Yan was to be executed after autumn.
Shen Yan did not resent his fate. He had taken a life, and this was the price he had to pay. Everyone has to pay the price for their choices, and Shen Yan chose revenge, so he had to bear the consequences. Pan Yue was initially hesitant about whether to release Yang Cai Wei after everything was uncovered, but how could he bear to let go of a Yang Cai Wei like this?
According to Shen Yan's account, A Ze found Shen Ci's diary, which had a pattern of water ripples drawn on it.
