Episode 8 recap: Shen Tu Nan freed Wei Ruo Lai.
Upon learning that Li Cheng Da was coming to Wei Ruo Lai tonight to get the keys and seal of the safe, A Wen wanted to keep the box of gold bars for himself. He held an iron rod and intended to kill Li Cheng Da, allowing Wei Ruo Lai to escape with the gold bars. However, Wei Ruo Lai desperately stopped A Wen. Li Cheng Da and the detective team had set a trap for him to fall into. He dared not return home, nor let A Wen take the risk. Wei Ruo Lai swore to fulfill Wei Ruo Chuan's dying wish and deliver the batch of gold bars to the contact person. A Wen was worried about Wei Ruo Lai's safety and advised him to hand over the gold bars to Li Cheng Da, but Wei Ruo Lai did not want to betray Wei Ruo Chuan's wish.
Wei Ruo Lai returned home very late, and Xu Nuo intercepted him downstairs. They used coded language to communicate, and Xu Nuo introduced himself as Wei Ruo Chuan's party introduction person. Wei Ruo Lai was skeptical but also somewhat convinced. Xu Nuo didn't have time to explain everything in detail and made it clear that Li Cheng Da was a traitor, and Wei Ruo Chuan sacrificed himself because of the betrayal. Xu Nuo instructed Wei Ruo Lai to hand over the keys and seal of the safe to Li Cheng Da.
When Wei Ruo Lai returned to his room, Li Cheng Da had been waiting for a long time. Wei Ruo Lai handed him Wei Ruo Chuan's seal and the safekeeping receipt. Li Cheng Da was overjoyed and hastily bid farewell to Wei Ruo Lai.
Wei Ruo Lai tossed and turned in bed, going over everything that had happened in the past two days. Xu Nuo suspected that the detective team would ambush at the bank. If Li Cheng Da wanted to keep the gold bars for himself, he would definitely be caught. Xu Nuo planned to find a way to snatch the gold bars back at that time. Xu Nuo vowed to avenge Wei Ruo Chuan.
Wei Ruo Lai took out a photo of him and Wei Ruo Chuan, praying that Xu Nuo would retrieve the gold bars and seek revenge for Wei Ruo Chuan. Otherwise, he would personally kill the traitor, Li Cheng Da. Li Cheng Da disguised himself and arrived at the bank early, using Wei Ruo Chuan's keys and seal to retrieve the box of gold bars and then left quietly.
Biao Zi and his men kept watch at the entrance of the Rixin Bookstore, but they didn't see Li Cheng Da. Biao Zi realized that something was wrong and hurriedly went to inquire at the bookstore, only to find out that Li Cheng Da had already left early. He quickly returned to report to Lin Qiao Song. Lin Qiao Song sent Biao Zi to the train station and the dock to intercept Li Cheng Da, and also dispatched people to inquire about Li Cheng Da's whereabouts at the bookstore.
Biao Zi learned from a bookseller that Li Cheng Da had bought a ticket to Hong Kong. He immediately informed Lin Qiao Song, who personally led his men to the dock. They conducted a thorough search of the ship but did not find Li Cheng Da.
In fact, Li Cheng Da did not board the large ship bound for Hong Kong. He found a small boat, and the boatman was responsible for taking him to Zhoushan. Li Cheng Da was dissatisfied, and just as he was about to leave, Xu Nuo shot and killed him. Xu Nuo took the box of gold bars.
Xu Nuo returned to his residence, and Shen Jinzhen brought him a bowl of wonton soup. Xu Nuo greatly appreciated Shen Tunan's vision for the development of the bank and asked Shen Jinzhen to obtain Shen Tunan's work plan. Shen Tunan was always diligent in his work and Shen Jinzhen wanted to find a way to exploit a loophole through Wei Ruolai.
Early in the morning, Lin Qiaosong came to the central bank to complain to Shen Tunan and Deng Ze, firmly accusing Wei Ruolai of collusion. Shen Tunan immediately summoned Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai admitted that Wei Ruochuan had given him a box of gold bars before his death, but he had given the key and seal of the safe to Li Shengda. Moreover, he had no prior knowledge that Wei Ruochuan was a communist. He not only made a phone call to report Li Shengda but also sent a confession letter to the investigation team. Lin Qiaosong sent Biaozi to investigate, and they quickly found the letter.
Biaozi brought Wei Ruolai's confession letter, and Shen Tunan vouched for him with a resolute attitude. Lin Qiaosong couldn't find any evidence of Wei Ruolai's collusion and had to leave in frustration. Shen Tunan complained that Wei Ruolai should not have hidden anything from him. Wei Ruolai was unaware of Wei Ruochuan's actions. He had no understanding of politics but felt that the current Nationalist government was too corrupt, with wealth concentrated in the hands of a few while the common people suffered. Shen Tunan vowed to change this situation, and Wei Ruolai was willing to follow him.
Xu Nuo used twenty gold bars to rescue the eight captured comrades in the French Concession and escorted them out of Shanghai before he could leave with peace of mind. Lin Qiaosong learned of this too late and was furious. Shen Tunan called Mr. Song to apply for tariff reform. Mr. Song advised him to give up as it would anger many prominent figures. However, Shen Tunan was willing to take full responsibility, so Mr. Song reluctantly agreed and appointed him as the full representative of the central bank to reclaim tariff custody rights.
Kang Shaojie learned of Lin Qiaosong's recent series of failures and vented his anger on him, even personally beating him along with Biaozi and others, leaving him badly injured. Lin Qiaosong didn't want Biaozi and the others to witness his miserable state, so he forcefully drove them away. Shen Tunan decided to carry out bold and comprehensive tariff reforms, not wanting to burden his family. He asked his wife, Su Cishu, to take their daughter, Xiaoyuer, back to their hometown to visit his fourth uncle. Su Cishu sensed that Shen Tunan had something on his mind and insisted on staying to accompany him.
