Episode 19 recap: Hua Liang helps Hua Zhen find evidence.
Late at night, Wei Daiqing reports the progress of the recent investigation to his superiors. Wei Daiqing's superior has always wanted to bring down the Hua family and directly tells Wei Daiqing that if he can confirm Hua Zhen's affiliation with the Communist Party, he will be given the position of Assistant Prosecutor. Wei Daiqing has long coveted power and comes from a peasant background with no connections, making promotion difficult. In order to obtain this position, he takes a risky move by finding an escaped soldier who is imprisoned. Therefore, as long as he can get Hua Zhen to sign a confession, the soldier can be immediately released.
The escaped soldier enters Hua Zhen's cell with a dagger, unaware that he is no match for Hua Zhen. Hua Zhen uses a tie to subdue the person threatening him. Wei Daiqing, in order to cover his tracks, directly shoots and buries the unconscious soldier, fearing that his subordinates will expose him. Seeing this horrifying scene, they are terrified, realizing that their immediate superior is ruthless and capable of any evil act. In the future, they may meet a similar fate.
Shi Junyu finally repairs the radio and eagerly contacts the organization to inquire if Hua Zhen is their comrade. She quickly receives a reply stating that Hua Zhen is not one of them. Shi Junyu immediately conveys this information to Chen Hao, urging him not to act rashly and to stay away from Hua Zhen during this time, as it may bring trouble to Hua Zhen.
Chen Hao remembers the belt. In the past, Hua Zhen didn't hesitate to take off his own belt to help stop the bleeding for Runjin. Little did he know that it would become his stumbling block. In the courtroom, Wei Daiqing is aggressive, trying to prove that Hua Zhen and Runjin have a close relationship, and the photos on the forged Communist Party documents also depict him. In fact, Wei Daiqing, in order to fabricate false charges, directly orders someone to silence the landlord of the rented house in Shanghai.
The situation is very unfavorable for Hua Zhen. Hua Liang makes an effort to plead with trusted leaders at higher levels and manages to secure three days to verify the evidence.
While searching for evidence, Hua Liang was continuously monitored by Wei Daiqing's secret agents, who attempted to interfere with Hua Liang's search. Hua Liang came up with a plan and decided to meet with Chen Hao secretly. They made arrangements and then had an assistant invite the tailor who made the belt for Hua Zhen to a café, intentionally making it visible to Wei Daiqing. As expected, the next day at the appointed time, when Hua Liang hadn't even started a conversation with the tailor who had just arrived, Wei Daiqing sent people to intervene and prevent the tailor from talking to Hua Liang.
Wei Daiqing believed he had done everything flawlessly and would soon be promoted to a higher position. He even went to a luxury store and purchased a pair of expensive shoes for himself. He arrogantly made the salesperson kneel down to put the new shoes on him. As he walked out of the shoe store, he directly gave his old shoes to his subordinate. Three years ago, his subordinate had given him all his savings to buy a new pair of shoes. Now he wanted to "gift" his old shoes to the subordinate. Upon receiving Wei Daiqing's old shoebox, the officer's hand trembled slightly.
Late at night, Wei Daiqing returned to the prison and pressured Hua Zhen to sign the confession as soon as possible. At this point, Wei Daiqing no longer bothered to maintain his disguise and made arrogant remarks. He expressed disdain for Hua Zhen's identity, mocking the fact that there were still people helping to find evidence because of Hua Zhen's status. If it were someone else, they would have long been buried in a remote wilderness.
Wei Daiqing's words and actions chilled Hua Zhen's heart. Before coming to Nanjing, he had lived a sheltered life and had never witnessed the bureaucratic style within the Kuomintang.
