Episode 2 recap: Luo Ai Lian's Rebirth with a Face Swap.
Luo Ai Lian was imprisoned in a firewood shed. Luo Xue Er distracted the guards and wanted Luo Ai Lian to seize the opportunity to escape. However, Luo Ai Lian wanted to stay and investigate her father's cause of death. Luo Xue Er wanted Luo Ai Lian to prioritize her own safety and uncover the truth later, and she would stay in the mansion to search for clues.
With Luo Xue Er's help, Luo Ai Lian left the Luo residence. However, she worried that Xue Er would be implicated because of her escape. She intended to return to the mansion but was surprised to find that the coachman was actually Xu Cheng Feng in disguise. Luo Ai Lian revealed that she had touched agarwood powder when she held her father's corpse and speculated that her father had died from an asthma attack caused by someone familiar.
Luo Ai Lian entrusted Xu Cheng Feng with the jade pendant her mother had left for her as a token. She only wished for Xu Cheng Feng to believe her and help her uncover the truth. Xu Cheng Feng chose to believe Luo Ai Lian and accepted the jade pendant as a token, leaving her with a firework signal flare for future contact.
When Luo Ai Lian returned to the Luo residence, she indeed found agarwood powder in Luo Shuang Shuang's room and couldn't understand why she would harm her father. Luo Ai Lian invited Luo Shuang Shuang to the ancestral shrine in the name of Xu Cheng Feng. She pointed out Luo Shuang Shuang's actions and forced her to confess her crimes. Seeing the truth exposed, Luo Shuang Shuang panicked and knocked out Luo Ai Lian. After learning about it, Aunt Zhou wanted to kill Luo Ai Lian to eliminate future troubles but was fortunately discovered by Uncle Luo Jizhou.
Realizing the situation was not good, Aunt Zhou revealed the truth that Luo Shuang Shuang was Luo Jizhou's daughter. Although Luo Jizhou loved his niece, he allowed Aunt Zhou to set fire to the ancestral shrine in order to protect his own daughter. He intended to burn Luo Ai Lian to death there. Luo Ai Lian pleaded desperately, but her uncle abandoned her in anguish.
Xu Cheng Feng's main purpose for this journey was to investigate the treasure map hidden in the imperial escort carried by the Shen Family Escort Agency. He knew about the Shen family's behavior and believed that they wouldn't steal from themselves. Shen Zi Shan, the young master of the Shen Family Escort Agency, managed to snatch back the escort's cargo from the mountain bandits single-handedly. He handed over the cargo to the Luo Escort Master, hoping that he could help retrieve the life-saving Grass of the Divine Dragon for his sister.
On the way back, Shen Zi Shan unexpectedly rescued the unconscious Luo Ai Lian from the river and brought her to a medical cottage for treatment. Although Shen Zi Shan's subordinates retrieved the Divine Dragon Grass, the renowned doctor Miao admitted that it was already too late. The Grass of the Divine Dragon was useless for Shen Dan Qing now.
The only solution was to perform a heart transplant for Shen Dan Qing to save her life, and the current best candidate was Luo Ai Lian, who had been saved by Shen Zi Shan but had already been disfigured.
Shen Dan Qing didn't want others to die because of her, so she made a decision for her brother, Shen Zi Shan. She chose to sacrifice herself to resolve her brother's inner conflicts.
Doctor Miao proposed to transplant Dan Qing's face onto Luo Ai Lian's disfigured face, so that it wouldn't worsen Shen's condition due to the loss of his daughter. Even as a substitute, Dan Qing's life could possibly continue through this method. Luo Ai Lian, who woke up from her unconscious state, overheard their conversation and was willing to accept the face swap, enduring the pain in order to survive.
After undergoing the rebirth with a face swap, Luo Ai Lian saw her new face and realized that she had a brief encounter with Shen Dan Qing in the temple. Shen Zi Shan inquired and learned that the woman he saved was Luo Ai Lian, the young miss of the Luo family from Ganlu Hall. She was initially bound in the Luo family ancestral shrine and tried to escape but was harmed again. It was the maid, Bin'er, who desperately saved Luo Ai Lian, but in the end, Bin'er fell from the shrine and died in Luo Ai Lian's place.
Aunt Zhou used the excuse that the person who killed their father didn't deserve to be buried in the Luo family and threw the "Luo Ai Lian" corpse from the fire into an unmarked grave. Luo Xue Er found Aunt Zhou's hairpin in the remnants of the fire and couldn't understand why she had been to the ancestral shrine. Aunt Zhou urged Luo Jizhou to quickly resolve the case with the authorities. She also ordered people to spread rumors that the legitimate daughter of the Luo family, enraged by her father's decision to marry her off to the Du family as a ghost marriage, killed her father and set herself on fire in the ancestral shrine.
In order for Luo Ai Lian to become Shen Dan Qing, Shen Zi Shan shared their past experiences and upbringing. Luo Ai Lian learned that Dan Qing enjoyed painting birds and was skilled in martial arts. She promised Shen Zi Shan that she would fulfill Dan Qing's duties but didn't want to give up on her revenge.
However, Shen Zi Shan hoped that Luo Ai Lian would forget the past and become a better version of Shen Dan Qing. In the days that followed, Luo Ai Lian tirelessly practiced her painting skills and martial arts. She not only aimed to become Shen Dan Qing as soon as possible but also harbored the desire for revenge against those who wronged her and her family in the future.
