Episode 8 recap: The police have confirmed that Nan Ya acted in self-defense.

Based on the evidence found, including hair from the sewer and items left in Xu Yi's room, it is highly likely that Xu Yi was having an extramarital affair and had a live-in girlfriend. The girlfriend was very well hidden, and neither the landlord nor the neighbors had seen her before. Although there were signs of forced entry into the room, the person who entered took careful precautions and did not leave any fingerprints.

The leadership of the local police department believes that Xu Yi was afraid of Nan Ya reporting him, so he attempted to silence her by killing her. This led to Nan Ya defending herself in a state of panic and killing Xu Yi. When combined with the basic evidence and witness testimonies in Nan Ya's case, it means that Xu Yi had a motive to commit murder, and Nan Ya's act of self-defense should also be justified.

Although Lao Chen disagrees with this inference, he cannot change the outcome. Lin Fang Lu informed Zhou Luo that Nan Ya would soon be released without guilt. Suspicious of the inexplicable missing pages in Nan Ya's medical record, Lin Fang Lu suspected deliberate destruction and approached Chen Ling to inquire about the situation, which caused Chen Ling to have an emotional outburst.

Chen Ling angrily left the hospital and sat alone by the river, lost in thought. After calming down, she conversed with Lin Fang Lu. Based on her understanding of Nan Ya, she firmly believed that Nan Ya had murdered Xu Yi. In fact, the tragedy of Nan Ya traces back to her mother, who loved poetry. This woman had hopes of returning to the city, but after a drunken night, she was violated by Nan Ya's father and ended up pregnant, trapped in Qingshui Town.

Nan Ya's father became addicted to alcohol, and whenever he was under the influence, the home turned into his outlet for venting. Faced with her husband's repeated acts of violence, Nan Ya's mother endured immense psychological pressure and ultimately chose to end her life with resentment. After losing her mother, Nan Ya did not receive any remorse or change from her father. He quickly remarried a divorced woman named Hu Xiu, who had a son named Hu Lifan. Hu Lifan was both Nan Ya's stepbrother and the man who truly ruined her life.

Initially, Nan Ya had excellent grades and planned to apply to universities to leave Qingshui Town. However, Hu Xiu wanted her to marry Hu Lifan, withholding money to pay for her application fees and forcing her to drop out of school. There was a period of time when Nan Ya gradually became more cheerful under the guidance of Chen Ling and her parents, but soon after, her father died from alcohol-related causes, and she was publicly slapped and berated by Hu Xiu.

Since then, Nan Ya's personality has returned to its previous state of being solitary and indifferent, unwilling to share her troubles with Hu Ling. Hu Lifan was lazy and squandered the family's savings, relying on Hu Xiu for food, clothing, and entertainment. As a result, Nan Ya had no money to continue her education and was deprived of the opportunity to further her studies by the Hu family. After graduating from high school, she could only work in a factory to save money.

On the other hand, Chen Ling met a wealthy man named Xu Yi and quickly established a romantic relationship with him, even introducing him to Nan Ya. However, Chen Ling never imagined that Nan Ya would seduce her boyfriend, develop deep feelings for him behind her back, and eventually marry him.

Feeling betrayed by her friend and lover, Chen Ling didn't blame Xu Yi, who was responsible for the chaos, but instead directed her hatred towards Nan Ya. She spread rumors about Nan Ya, taking advantage of the curiosity of outsiders and Xu Yi's suspicions, ultimately dragging Nan Ya into a deep abyss.

After meeting with Chen Ling, Lin Fang Lu personally visited Nan Ya and informed her about her daughter Wan Wan's situation. Back then, Lin Fang Lu successfully enrolled in the University of Political Science and Law and hoped that Nan Ya would leave Qingshui Town as soon as possible. However, after many years, Nan Ya ended up following in her mother's footsteps.

Nan Ya told Lin Fang Lu that Xu Yi was a selfish, irritable, suspicious, and possessive person, deeply weak and without any moral boundaries. Lin Fang Lu was curious why Nan Ya married such a person, but Nan Ya's attitude suddenly changed, stating that even if she was vain, it should not be a reason for domestic violence.

In the quiet courtyard of the hospital late at night, Zhou Luo and Nan Ya sat side by side, opening up to each other for the first time. Zhou Luo recited poetry to Nan Ya and even adapted the poems into music, which touched Nan Ya's heart. The conflicts and contradictions between the two seemed to dissipate, and they went back to the good times they had at the audiovisual store.

The next day, Zhou Luo's family completed the discharge procedures for him, and Nan Ya personally knitted a sweater to give to him, which surprised him. However, not long after, Xu Yi was released from detention and went to find Nan Ya with flowers and gifts. Soon, the neighbors started spreading rumors that the two had reconciled. When Zhou Luo heard about it, he was furious and threw the sweater into the trash when he got home.

Unable to hold back, Zhou Luo went to confront Nan Ya, only to hear that she couldn't leave Xu Yi. In reality, Xu Yi behaved politely and generously in front of others while deliberately spreading rumors in private, trying to portray Nan Ya as a promiscuous woman to satisfy his twisted possessiveness.

Nan Ya knew this all too well and took advantage of Xu Yi's moment of vulnerability, holding a dagger to his neck, displaying her resolute willingness to die together. This frightened Xu Yi into agreeing to move out of the house.
