Episode 8 recap: The police have confirmed that Nan Ya acted in self-defense.
Based on the evidence found, including hair from the sewer and items left in Xu Yi's room, it is highly likely that Xu Yi was having an extramarital affair and had a live-in girlfriend. The girlfriend was very well hidden, and neither the landlord nor the neighbors had seen her before. Although there were signs of forced entry into the room, the person who entered took careful precautions and did not leave any fingerprints.
The leadership of the local police department believes that Xu Yi was afraid of Nan Ya reporting him, so he attempted to silence her by killing her. This led to Nan Ya defending herself in a state of panic and killing Xu Yi. When combined with the basic evidence and witness testimonies in Nan Ya's case, it means that Xu Yi had a motive to commit murder, and Nan Ya's act of self-defense should also be justified.

After losing her mother, Nan Ya did not receive any remorse or change from her father. He quickly remarried a divorced woman named Hu Xiu, who had a son named Hu Lifan. Hu Lifan was both Nan Ya's stepbrother and the man who truly ruined her life.
Initially, Nan Ya had excellent grades and planned to apply to universities to leave Qingshui Town. However, Hu Xiu wanted her to marry Hu Lifan, withholding money to pay for her application fees and forcing her to drop out of school. There was a period of time when Nan Ya gradually became more cheerful under the guidance of Chen Ling and her parents, but soon after, her father died from alcohol-related causes, and she was publicly slapped and berated by Hu Xiu.
Since then, Nan Ya's personality has returned to its previous state of being solitary and indifferent, unwilling to share her troubles with Hu Ling. In the quiet courtyard of the hospital late at night, Zhou Luo and Nan Ya sat side by side, opening up to each other for the first time. Zhou Luo recited poetry to Nan Ya and even adapted the poems into music, which touched Nan Ya's heart. The conflicts and contradictions between the two seemed to dissipate, and they went back to the good times they had at the audiovisual store.
The next day, Zhou Luo's family completed the discharge procedures for him, and Nan Ya personally knitted a sweater to give to him, which surprised him. However, not long after, Xu Yi was released from detention and went to find Nan Ya with flowers and gifts. Soon, the neighbors started spreading rumors that the two had reconciled. When Zhou Luo heard about it, he was furious and threw the sweater into the trash when he got home.
Unable to hold back, Zhou Luo went to confront Nan Ya, only to hear that she couldn't leave Xu Yi.
