Episode 5 recap: Xia Guo is being targeted at work.
Xia Guo, who lives a simple and busy but happy life in Leshan, is about to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Yu Jian's mother gave Xia Guo a gift, hoping that she would accompany Wang Yan for the New Year this year because Yu Yan and her husband had returned, and she wanted the whole family to be together. Xia Guo, after all, was not officially married and was considered an outsider, and she was also staying in Yu Yan's room.
As a result, there would be no place for Yu Yan to stay when she returned. Xia Guo understood Yu Jian's mother's meaning and decided to go home for the New Year. Xia Guo planned to say hello to Yu Yan and then leave for home. When she saw Yu Yan, everyone was very happy, except for Yu Jian. After distributing the gifts prepared for everyone, Yan Yan told her mother the truth because An De Lu had to go to Chengdu to meet a client and would be leaving soon.
Yu Jian was very dissatisfied with An De Lu, feeling that he was irresponsible. Even though they had arrived at the hospital downstairs, he did not go upstairs to visit his father-in-law. He also did not come up to the house and didn't spend the New Year at home. Yu Jian felt that Yu Yan could stay at home for the New Year and didn't need to accompany An De Lu to Chengdu to meet clients.
Yu Jian was angry because An De Lu didn't consider their family at all. The siblings had a quarrel. An De Lu went upstairs to urge Yu Yan, and they also had a quarrel. An De Lu only cared about his clients and work and didn't have the intention of spending the New Year with their family.
The situation became very awkward. In the end, Yu Yan left with An De Lu. Xia Guo took the things prepared by Yu Jian's mother and went to give them to Yu Yan, but they were thrown into the trash by An De Lu. Even if they quarreled, a hug would have resolved the issue between the couple. Yu Jian discovered that Xia Guo had not returned all this time and learned from his mother that Xia Guo had gone home for the New Year. Yu Jian was very angry and felt that his mother had driven Xia Guo away. Xia Guo clearly had a bad relationship with Wang Yan, yet she was pushed towards him.
Yu Jian apologized to Xia Guo on behalf of his mother, but Xia Guo still decided to go find his mother and have the New Year's Eve dinner with her. His mother had already remarried, and the other party treated her well, calling her daughter affectionately.
However, Xia Guo couldn't be happy facing the unfamiliar "family." Xia Guo's stepfather kept urging her to drink alcohol, even though she rarely drank. But she didn't want to upset everyone during the New Year, so she watched her mother being forced to drink by her stepfather, deep in thought. It seemed like her mother's life wasn't going as well as she wished.
Xia Guo had never drunk so much alcohol before. After dinner, she contacted Yu Jian to pick her up. When Xia Guo saw Yu Jian, she burst into tears. She didn't know what kind of life her mother was living. She felt like an unwanted child, unable to find a place to belong even during the New Year. Fortunately, Yu Jian was by her side, giving her a sense of belonging. Yu Jian carried Xia Guo on his back and took her home.
When they arrived home, Yu Jian's mother was waiting. She saw Xia Guo return and immediately went to warm up the dishes. Xia Guo watched the busy aunt in the kitchen and felt deeply moved. Yan Yan's life wasn't going well either. She relied on An De Lu to support her, so she had to do things she didn't like and obey An De Lu.
At this moment, Xia Guo hoped that her other self in another world could live a contented life. The belief in the big city was different from the small town. Xia Guo celebrated with her colleagues but didn't experience the warmth and coziness of celebrating the New Year in a small family. Nannan hired an assistant named Xu Li, and Xia Guo seemed to have become the abandoned one. Nannan no longer assigned Xia Guo to handle online tasks, and she was only responsible for warehouse work. Xia Guo wasn't even informed about department meetings. She didn't know what she had done to offend Nannan. Later, she learned from her colleagues that the reason Nannan treated her that way was because she received a red envelope from Manager Xue and was getting too close to him.
Xia Guo also knew a secret, that Tim was the heir apparent. It was Nannan's deliberate arrangement for him and Xia Guo to go to the live broadcasting site, so when problems arose, Xia Guo was the only one blamed. From another perspective, Tim actually helped Xia Guo, otherwise, the consequences would have been much worse.
In this company filled with hidden conflicts, Xia Guo still didn't possess the basic survival skills in a big company. She didn't understand why she had to take sides. It should have been enough to focus on doing her own work. But there could only be one top dog, and Xue and Chen were bound to fight. Xia Guo wanted to make a good impression, so she proactively bought coffee. However, she missed the elevator and ended up being late. It was Manager Xue who helped her swipe the executive elevator card to go upstairs, but she was still late. During the meeting, she spilled coffee, which made Nannan very angry and she asked Xia Guo to leave the conference room. Xia Guo was very upset and cried on the balcony, where she ran into Manager Xue.
Manager Xue took Xia Guo to his office, and she took the initiative to propose to be his assistant. Manager Xue said he would seriously consider it.
