Episode 4 recap: Mu Qing developed a love for Wang Jialuo.
Mu Qing led his men straight to Shanghai, intending to find the hidden clues ahead of Zhuo Bufan. However, he disembarked midway to take a rest, which puzzled Getai. It wasn't until several Japanese people followed and tracked them that he understood Mu Qing's intention. After dealing with these few followers, they continued on to Shanghai. Meanwhile, a group from the Rongtian Sword faction also discovered that they were being followed on the way. Zhuo Bufan easily dealt with several masked individuals, realizing that they were also Japanese and had been tailing them since Tianjin. It seemed that the Japanese hadn't relaxed their surveillance on them.
Tang Yu and his group changed into student uniforms and headed to Shanghai. Tang Yu patiently explained to his subordinates the contents of the newspaper, including what revolution and democracy meant. By the end of his explanation, he himself was full of confidence and felt that he was doing something earth-shattering, a just act to save the people. He was filled with enthusiasm and ready to devote himself wholeheartedly to this cause. Unfortunately, their whereabouts had already been noticed by Mu Qing.
Mu Qing obtained information about Tang Yu and his group's whereabouts along the way and guessed the address where they would spend the night. So he surrounded them overnight and ordered his men to besiege them. After a fierce fight, Tang Yu managed to escape, but one person was killed, and the other two were captured alive. Seeing Tang Yu fleeing in panic, Mu Qing followed closely behind, having already locked onto Tang Yu. However, he didn't expect Wang Jialuo to intercept Tang Yu along his escape route. Wang Jialuo also had some skills and managed to kill Tang Yu and found a notebook in his pocket.
Mu Qing didn't expect Wang Jialuo to appear out of nowhere. Wang Jialuo was just a low-ranking constable, yet he had pursued this case all the way here for a case in his jurisdiction. This impressed Mu Qing and made him admire Wang Jialuo's talent. He persuaded Wang Jialuo to return to Tianjin and not to get involved in this matter anymore. However, Wang Jialuo refused and even cited the laws of the Qing Dynasty, leaving Mu Qing speechless. Mu Qing saw Wang Jialuo's shabby appearance and handed him ten taels of silver. Wang Jialuo, who was embarrassed about his empty pockets, reluctantly accepted it but also took out his house key, indicating that he would return the money someday. However, he would continue to investigate this case.
In the capital city, during a meal, Zhong Haichao deliberately or unintentionally mentioned Mu Qing's return. Wu Lanshan's expression changed slightly, claiming to be unaware of it. However, Zhong Haichao seemed to attach great importance to this matter because Wu Lanshan and Mu Qing had almost married in the past. The late emperor had supported their union, and it had become a thorn in Zhong Haichao's heart for many years.
On their wedding night, after Zhong Haichao happily consummated their marriage, he discovered that Wu Lanshan was not a virgin. He became furious and demanded to know who took her virginity, pointing directly at Mu Qing. Worried that he would harm Mu Qing, Wu Lanshan pleaded with him to spare Mu Qing and promised to be completely obedient to him in the future, even allowing him to take other wives and concubines. Only then did Zhong Haichao relent. However, his anger remained, and he went to Yanhua Liuxiang to find a virgin girl to temporarily alleviate his resentment.
After Mu Qing left, Wang Jialuo took out Tang Yu's notebook to search for clues. He learned that the Rongtian Sword faction was preparing to go to Shanghai. He immediately set off and halfway there, he discovered that Lin Anjing was following him. She claimed to have nowhere else to go, so Wang Jialuo reluctantly allowed her to accompany him to Shanghai. The captured disciples of the Rongtian Sword faction had confessed that they were going to Shanghai to meet a person named Tan Xian. Mu Qing immediately understood Zhuo Bufan's plan, which was to disguise themselves as members of the Allied Forces and meet with Tan Xian to find the hidden clues.
Wang Jialuo and Lin Anjing arrived in Shanghai. After arranging for Lin Anjing to stay at a hotel, Wang Jialuo sought a secluded place to rest. However, he was unexpectedly surrounded by Japanese people. His actions had interfered with the Japanese's plan to obtain the hidden treasure, so they had no choice but to eliminate him. After a fierce fight, Wang Jialuo was forced to the edge of a cliff, with jumping off being his only chance of survival. Without hesitation, Wang Jialuo turned around and jumped off the cliff.
