Episode 13 recap: The Lunar Pearl was shattered, and the Queen became furious with Xiao Dou Zi.
On a full moon night, Mei Yu Shan and Xiao Dou Zi sat in the museum, holding the Lunar Pearl together and waiting for their body-swapping ritual to succeed. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck, splitting the Lunar Pearl into two halves and dropping it to the ground. Xiao Dou Zi hurriedly picked it up, muttering that it could still be used if she could just put it back together. But then another lightning bolt completely shattered the pearl.
Seeing their body-swapping hopes dashed, Mei Yu Shan complained about a lifetime of being a maid, feeling she had been taken advantage of. Xiao Dou Zi was even more aggrieved, as she never wanted to be a noble lady in the first place, forced to follow etiquette and attend the academy, without the freedom of the city streets. Due to pressing court matters, Nan Gong Yao flew into a rage at his subordinates. Xiao Dou Zi tried to speak to Nan Gong Yao, but he was still preoccupied with the previous incident and ignored her, though he later began pondering why Xiao Dou Zi's body-swap had failed.
At the Imperial Academy, the students were assigned to work in pairs to recite that day's lessons. Huang Yuan Yuan originally wanted to pair with Xiao Dou Zi, but was blocked by Zhuang Yang Yang, who mocked Xiao Dou Zi for only relying on the Crown Prince. By the end of class, everyone except Xiao Dou Zi had completed the assignment, and she was left behind in the academy.
Nan Gong Yao began waiting at the academy gates, when he suddenly saw Xiao Dou Zi storming out, loudly declaring she wanted to leave the palace. Mei Yu Shan tried to stop her, explaining that if Xiao Dou Zi left while in Mei Yu Shan's body, it would bring disgrace to the Prime Minister's Mansion. But Xiao Dou Zi was no longer thinking clearly and insisted on leaving. In the struggle to stop her, both Mei Yu Shan and Xiao Dou Zi tumbled into the lake beside the pavilion.
Bai Ye and Nan Gong Yao happened to be passing by, and without hesitation, they both jumped into the lake to rescue the two. They both swam towards Xiao Dou Zi, with Bai Ye reaching her first and pulling her out of the water. Nan Gong Yao saw that Mei Yu Shan was about to sink, so he quickly saved her as well.
Xiao Dou Zi thanked Bai Ye for the timely rescue, even wiping the water droplets from his face. Bai Ye thoughtfully helped Xiao Dou Zi tidy up her clothes. Nan Gong Yao, filled with jealousy, immediately pulled Xiao Dou Zi to his side and inquired worriedly about what had happened. Mei Yu Shan was lying on the bed, coughing uncontrollably. Xiao Dou Zi went to her bedside, and as Mei Yu Shan leaned out to spit, the mark on her neck was exposed. Bai Ye happened to see it and was suddenly reminded of some past events involving the destruction of the Xiangsheng Kingdom, so he immediately ordered his people to investigate.
Mei Yu Shan guessed that the Queen would not let Nan Gong Yao and them off the hook for the lake incident, so Xiao Dou Zi secretly went to the Eastern Palace at night to plead their case. But just as they were talking, the Queen suddenly arrived, and Nan Gong Yao quickly hid Xiao Dou Zi in his bedroom.
Xing Shi noticed Bai Ye's reaction upon seeing the mark, and fearing for the Princess's safety, secretly had a small bird place the Crown Prince's jade pendant in Mei Yu Shan's room, hoping to frame Xiao Dou Zi for secretly pining for the Crown Prince, so that she would be expelled from the palace. That night, the small bird sneaked into Mei Yu Shan's room, only to find Xing Shi sitting by the bedside, looking concerned, which made the small bird start to question Xing Shi's true feelings.
After they left, Mei Yu Shan's mother had the eunuchs go check on her daughter in her room, but they found that the person lying on the bed was not actually her daughter. Xiao Dou Zi accidentally made a noise in Nan Gong Yao's bedroom and had to quickly switch locations a few times. The Queen, suspecting that Mei Yu Shan was being hidden in the Eastern Palace, went to check her daughter's room when she couldn't find her.
