Episode 17 recap: Tong Sheng began to waver in his confidence about Su Xing's identity.

The death of Luo Guanying was a mixed blessing for people like Zhou Yamming, because Luo Guanying was killed as a communist party member, which effectively confirmed that Luo Guanying was a communist, meaning that Su Xing would have no way to redeem himself in the eyes of his teacher Tong Jiang Nan. Just as Zhou Yamming had predicted, the democratic activists gathered together to discuss the matter, believing that the murderer was someone impersonating a communist party liaison.

They unanimously pointed the finger at Su Xing, especially since Su Xing had strenuously opposed their plans to sail north. They decided that Su Xing must be a Nationalist party spy. When Lin Shiman learned that Dang Xunqi had someone kill Luo Guanying, he worried that the higher-ups would thoroughly investigate the matter. Dang Xunqi, however, was unconcerned, as he had framed the entire thing on the communists.

The death of Luo Guanying was a mixed blessing for people like Zhou Yamming, because Luo Guanying was killed as a communist party member, which meant that Su Xing would be effectively branded as a secret police agent, making it extremely difficult for him to redeem himself in the eyes of Tong Jiang Nan. Zhang Shaomu brought the news of Luo Guanying's murder to Tong Jiang Nan, and suspected that Su Xing was either the killer or the one who ordered it.

As a result, Tong Sheng's hatred for Su Xing intensified, and he wanted to confront Su Xing directly to get to the bottom of it, but was stopped by Zhang Shaomu. Zhang Shaomu felt that for Tong Sheng to go to Su Xing would be like a lamb entering the tiger's den, and Tong Jiang Nan also agreed with Zhang Shaomu, as in his view, Su Xing had now gone completely mad, and they were helpless against him.

Zhang Shaomu reminded Tong Jiang Nan not to wait any longer, and that the urgent priority was to find a way to sail north themselves. He happened to know a friend who was working on an ocean voyage, and might be able to offer them passage. Meanwhile, Lin Shiman was shocked that Dang Xunqi had killed to cover his tracks, and feared that the higher-ups would thoroughly investigate the matter, but Dang Xunqi was unconcerned, as he had framed the entire thing on the communists.

The forensic examination confirmed that Luo Guanying had been strangled and then staged to appear as a suicide by hanging. Li Wenbo personally interrogated Abiao, but Abiao adamantly denied killing anyone, even when Li Wenbo presented Dang Xunqi's arrest warrant. The district chief summoned Li Wenbo to the office and questioned him, as Li Wenbo himself had not expected the newspaper to have already published the news of Luo Guanying's death, and the district chief insisted that Li Wenbo publicly declare Luo Guanying's death as a suicide, with no murder involved.

Afterwards, Li Wenbo went to see Tong Jiang Nan, warning him to carefully consider who Luo Guanying might have been, and firmly asserting that he had been killed by his own people, and that only the ruthlessness of the Nationalists could have been responsible.

It's a pity that Li Wen Bo's warning to Tong Jiang Nan was completely useless, as Tong Jiang Nan still believed that Luo Guan Ying would risk his life to save him, so he must be a communist.

Su Xing came to the school gate and happened to run into Chen Xue Wei. He entrusted her to deliver a note to Tong Sheng. Chen Xue Wei deliberately announced in front of Zhang Shao Mu that Tong Sheng's boyfriend had sent her a message, attracting Zhang Shao Mu's attention. However, Tong Sheng simply glanced at it and returned to her office without saying much.

Zhang Shao Mu came to tell Tong Sheng not to meet with him, but Tong Sheng still had a glimmer of hope in Su Xing, whether he was Nationalist or Communist. After Tong Sheng left, Zhang Shao Mu secretly read the note Su Xing had given to Tong Sheng.

When he returned, Su Xing contacted Comrade Dong Fang, who confirmed that Luo Guan Ying was killed by A Biao, and the mastermind behind it was Dang Xun Qi, the boss of Chang He Trading Company. When Zhou Ya Ming heard this name, he suddenly remembered the news he had seen a few days ago about a gun-running case, and just then, Wang Da Long saw Dang Xun Qi's photo and pointed out that he was the one who led the secret agents to the shipyard to arrest people, which clearly showed that Dang Xun Qi was a Nationalist.

The democrats held a secret meeting at the Tong family, discussing Luo Guan Ying's death. They believed that only someone who pretended to be a Communist liaison could be the murderer of Luo Guan Ying, as they had pointed the finger at Su Xing, especially since Su Xing had been obstructing them from boarding the ship and heading north, which undoubtedly made him a secret agent. Tong Jiang Nan told everyone that his student Zhang Shao Mu could get them a ship, and then they could sail out of Hong Kong.

Su Xing made an appointment to meet Tong Sheng at a cafe in the harbor, and through the explosion and kidnapping incidents, he analyzed and explained his identity to her. Under Su Xing's narration, Tong Sheng's heart gradually wavered. Suddenly, the secret agents who had ambushed them in the cafe opened fire on the two. Su Xing protected Tong Sheng while fighting back, and eventually one agent was killed and one was injured, allowing them to escape.

As soon as they ran out of the cafe, they ran into Zhang Shao Mu. Su Xing asked Zhang Shao Mu to take Tong Sheng back home, and Zhang Shao Mu still suspected Su Xing, believing that the people who ambushed him were definitely Communists. After learning the news, Tong Jiang Nan was particularly concerned about Tong Sheng's safety and questioned Tong Sheng about why she met with Su Xing.

Seeing this, Zhang Shao Mu quickly stepped forward to defend Tong Sheng, and Tong Jiang Nan couldn't criticize her further. But Tong Sheng refuted that Tong Jiang Nan shouldn't hastily conclude that Su Xing was a Nationalist, as he might actually be a Communist, and she didn't want him to be wrongly accused. This led to a disagreement between the father and daughter.
