Episode 3 recap: Rong'er and Li Qi became rivals after a misunderstanding
Rong'er asked Shou Xi Aunt to help make a batch of delicious steamed buns, and Shuang Xi Aunt also made a batch out of fear of punishment, rushing to present them to the Emperor However, the steamed buns Shou Xi Aunt made had already been presented to the Emperor When Emperor Puyi tasted them, he found the flavor different from before and asked Shuang Xi Aunt about it Shuang Xi Aunt explained that a new palace maid had been teased and spilled the buns, so this batch was not her own
Puyi realized it was because of his own teasing that the buns were spilled, and happily said this batch tasted even better, rewarding Shuang Xi Aunt. Shuang Xi Aunt then let Rong'er and Qing'er off the hook for spilling the buns. Qing'er thanked Rong'er for her help, but Rong'er said it was all thanks to Shou Xi Aunt. Shou Xi Aunt coldly rejected their gratitude, saying she only helped due to the Empress Dowager's orders, hoping they would be more careful and obedient in the future.
After returning, Rong'er quickly wrote down the recipe, planning to open an even bigger shop outside the palace using the skills she learned. Qing'er envied Rong'er's excellent writing, and Rong'er explained she was sent to school for a few years when her grandparents were alive, but stopped after her mother passed away.
Qing'er invited Rong'er to meet her brother Li Qi, the Emperor's elite guard. But Rong'er and Li Qi got into an unpleasant argument due to a previous misunderstanding. Reporter Lu Qiu Tong went to the palace to find Li Qi, who had just left, and left a message for Li Qi to come to the newspaper warehouse to meet him.
Li Qi had an artist draw a portrait of the thief and went around the streets asking for information. The gatekeeper told Li Qi that someone was looking for him at the warehouse. When Li Qi arrived, he found that caretaker Liu had been killed, and mistakenly thought reporter Lu Qiu Tong was the murderer.
Both were taken to the police station for questioning. They argued with each other, but the police said the palace matter was not their jurisdiction, and asked Lu Qiu Tong and Li Qi to investigate at the palace. However, a call then informed the police that Lu Qiu Tong's identity was unusual, so they did not allow Li Qi to bring Lu Qiu Tong back to the palace.
Outside the police station, Lu Qiu Tong explained to Li Qi that he was not the murderer, and as the only one who had seen the culprit, he could help catch the criminal. Lu Qiu Tong found the police captain Yang and hoped to be promptly notified of any progress, then went to the Shen residence to look for clues.
At the Shen residence, Lu Qiu Tong encountered Li Qi and invited him in, handing over the thief's portrait. At the school, Li Yu Mei and Liu Er competed in the arena tournament, with Yu Mei ultimately defeating the overconfident Liu Er.
After the competition, Lu Qiu Tong approached Liu Er and offered him a long-term writing position at the newspaper. Liu Er was delighted, but saddened that his sister Rong'er had been taken to the palace. Lu Qiu Tong said he could try to help rescue Rong'er from the palace.
That night, the black-robed masked thief appeared in the palace again, fighting with Li Qi before fleeing. Li Qi noticed the thief's weapon matched the traces found at the Shen residence, suspecting it was the same person. The thief later appeared at the Wenyuan Library, stealing some books, but it was unclear what exactly was taken.
Li Qi reported all of this to Emperor Puyi.
