Episode 1 recap: Chen Huan got into university.
The children from the Chen, Lin, and Pan families gathered together, and Chen Huan said that the college entrance exam was tomorrow. They really caught a good time, as it was the first year the exam was being held. Chen Huan told everyone that they could all go to the city, and asked them to do their best on the exam tomorrow. When the results came out, Chen Huan and Lin Ping Ping were excited to check if their names were on the list. They saw that Chen Huan's name was the first one, and they were both very happy.
Lin Ping Ping walked around looking for her own name, but couldn't find it. Disappointed, Lin Ping Ping left, and Chen Huan quickly went after her. She took Chen Huan to the wishing tree where they used to make wishes together, and angrily asked him if the exam wasn't supposed to be fair for everyone. Chen Huan said he would go find out, but Lin Ping Ping told him not to, knowing it was likely because her father's case had not been overturned. Lin Ping Ping's mother, Liao Jingqiu, came home and told Lin's father that Lin Ping Ping's score was 4 points higher than the top score, but that it was because of her political issues.
Chen Huan's mother, Hu Guilanreally, was very happy that her son got into university. When Chen Huan went to the city for school, he wanted to see Lin Ping Ping, but she was still upset and didn't come out to see him. At the wishing tree, Chen Huan thought he saw Lin Ping Ping, but when he waved goodbye, he realized she wasn't there. Back in the city, Chen Huan saw his old friend He Dahai making furniture, and tried to get his attention without showing himself. But Hu Guilanreally saw Chen Huan and happily called him in. He Dahai told Chen Huan he was making furniture for his wedding to save money. Just then, Chen Huan's sister Chen Qing came home and excitedly hugged her brother. She saw He Dahai holding a spring and asked what it was, and He Dahai said it was just scrap from the factory, but Chen Qing told him it was actually a machine tool spring.
Chen Qing then scolded Chen Huan right in front of him. Hu Guilanreally told Chen Qing that even though He Dahai was just a regular guy, she shouldn't scold him so harshly in front of everyone. As they were busy cooking in the kitchen, Chen Xiaoou came home from school, and Chen Huan immediately picked her up, the two happily catching up.
Chen Huan went to the university and decided to live on campus. Lin Ping Ping's father used his connections to have the principal transfer Lin Ping Ping back to Beijing. Liao Jingqiu asked Lin's father if this was some kind of signal, wondering if his political case had finally been resolved, otherwise the principal wouldn't have suddenly come to take Lin Ping Ping back to the city.
Hu Guilanreally was transferred back to work at the supply and marketing cooperative in Beijing, and on her first day there she ran into Lin Ping Ping. When Chen Xiaoou came home, she saw He Dahai and called out "Brother!" Dahai asked what she should call him, and Chen Xiaoou excitedly yelled "Brother-in-law!" Chen Qing came out and told Chen Xiaoou not to shout like that, and Dahai just told her to call him whatever was appropriate. After Chen Qing left, Dahai told Chen Xiaoou to just call him brother-in-law, and he offered to treat her to some yogurt, which she happily accepted.
While Lin Ping Ping was at work, the troublemaker Liang came to try and befriend her. Hu Guilanreally saw this and chased Liang and his friends away with a broom. When she got home, she told Chen Huan about it, and he was shocked since they had just parted ways.
Lin Ping Ping complained to her parents about her job at the store, and Liao Jingqiu told her she could still take the college entrance exam. Lin Ping Ping still wasn't motivated, so Liao Jingqiu told her that Lin's father's case had been resolved that day. Hearing this, Lin Ping Ping happily said she wanted to celebrate. Liao Jingqiu felt that everything was now good, except for Lin Yida's situation.
Lin's father and Lin Ping Ping thought Lin Yida doing well as a technical expert at the factory was good enough, but Liao Jingqiu said he was her only son, and she hoped he could come back to be by her side before she retired.
