Episode 3 recap: Chen Huan saw Gu Yiming eating with another woman.
While eating, Hu Guilan thought about the rise in pork prices and regretted not buying some sausages. Chen's father told her there was no need, as prices always go up and whatever is hoarded will eventually be consumed. He felt a bit uneasy, as it had been many years since the last price hike. Chen Huan told them that price increases would become the norm, and this would motivate workers to work harder.
He said living standards will improve in the future, and He Dahai agreed, saying this would also benefit the workers. Hu Guilan heard someone calling "sister-in-law" from inside the house, and when she came out she saw Fuli.
At school, Chen Huan ran into Lin's father, who asked why he hadn't visited lately. Chen Huan said he's been busy with his studies. Lin's father, knowing Chen Huan studies economics, wanted to discuss some issues with him. Chen Huan said he'd visit when he had time to play chess with him.
At home, Chen Huan chatted with Fuli, who had come to discuss the new collective contract system in the village. Fuli asked Chen Huan for his opinion on whether the land should be divided up. Chen Huan felt dividing it would motivate the farmers, but Fuli said many in the village disagreed. After hearing Chen Huan's viewpoint, Fuli decided to go back and implement the new system.
While cooking, Zhu Qunying accidentally fell asleep, and Liao Qiuqiu scolded her when she smelled the burnt food. Lin's father thought Zhu Qunying's cooking was delicious, but Liao Qiuqiu said this was the second batch as the first was burned. She told Lin's father that Zhu Qunying was preparing for her night school exams.
Lin's father told her not to speak that way, and as they were talking, they heard Lin Yida and Zhu Qunying arguing loudly. It turned out that as soon as Lin Yida returned home from a meeting, Zhu Qunying had asked him about some issues she didn't understand, and he had angrily thrown his books on the floor.
Liao Qiuqiu felt that their son had returned home and their daughter-in-law was pregnant, so they should be happy, but she just couldn't seem to be. Lin Yida told Zhu Qunying that he had just been too tired and didn't mean to get angry with her. Zhu Qunying said she wasn't angry, just startled by his outburst.
Lin Yida then told Qunying a secret that he didn't want her to share yet - he was about to be promoted to Deputy Director. Fuli was preparing to go back, and Hu Guilan had packed him a lot of food. Chen's father even secretly gave him 20 yuan, and asked if he had figured out the land division issue. Fuli said Chen Huan had given him an idea, and he would go back and divide up the land.
Chen Qing asked Hu Guilan if Chen Huan had talked to Lin Pingping, and Hu Guilan said she wasn't sure if they had talked or not. Chen Qing asked Hu Guilan to be honest about whether she really wanted them to get together. Hu Guilan said she didn't want them to, feeling Chen Huan could do better.
As they were talking, He Dahai returned home carrying a large amount of pork intestines, which caused Chen Qing to start vomiting. Hu Guilan and Chen's father were happy that Chen Qing was pregnant, when suddenly Chen Xiaoou came out saying her stomach hurt, and collapsed on the floor. Hu Guilan called for Dahai but found he had already left, so she yelled for Liang. Liang quickly took Chen Xiaoou to the hospital, where the doctor diagnosed her with acute appendicitis.
While on vacation, Lin Pingping was going to travel with some classmates, and Lin Hanmin asked if it was because of Chen Huan. Lin Pingping asked if they thought Chen Huan was the only classmate she had. Lin Hanmin said he felt Chen Huan was a good choice.
As Chen Huan was eating with his friend Hongbing, they ran into Lin Pingping's boyfriend Gu Yiming dining with another woman, and Chen Huan decided to go talk to Gu Yiming about it.
