Episode 22 recap: Tao Si Yong opposed Qin Da Di's adventurous test flight.
Qin Da Di went to find Wu Jing Tian personally, wanting to learn the true stalling flight through him. Wu Jing Tian gave his own answer and suggested that he should go find Yu Zhao Nian. However, Yu Zhao Nian had a different view, believing that with wind and glue supply, it would be impossible to maintain a constant state, and many things would be extremely difficult to operate, even more difficult than anything they had encountered before.
When Tao Si Yong heard that Qin Da Di wanted to take the risk to experiment with the stalling flight to impact the ship at high speed, he resolutely and strongly opposed it. But Qin Da Di felt that if he didn't go on the test flight, Yu Tao and Xie Zhen Yu would be even worse off. Similarly, Kang Yan Cheng also opposed Xie Zhen Yu using this method, after all, it requires maintaining a constant angle of attack at high speed, and even the slightest mistake could be fatal.
Until now, Qin Da Di still did not believe that speed could solve the problem. He insisted on continuing to test fly according to the original plan, not willing to make meaningless sacrifices, thereby rejecting the suggestions of Xie Zhen Yu and Yu Tao. Although Yu Tao wanted to write a letter to the commander-in-chief to submit a plan, he was stopped by Xie Zhen Yu, who said that they still needed data support, and as long as the two could unify their views and front, they believed that the tragic facts would be more convincing than eloquence, and would definitely make Qin Da Di change his attitude.
That night, Tao Si Yong repeatedly watched the stalling flight video in the dormitory, studying the optimal approach. In the middle of the night, he summoned Xie Zhen Yu and Yu Tao to confirm. Although Xie Zhen Yu and Yu Tao were quite accepting of the stalling flight, they had never actually tried this flight technique to land on a carrier.
After much consideration, Tao Si Yong immediately called Yi Zheng Bang and reported his ideas about the stalling flight. Since the stalling flight had some danger, Tao Si Yong had some concerns. If Yi Zheng Bang ordered the use of the stalling flight, Qin Da Di would certainly be the first to sacrifice, and he was the only one in the team who was proficient in this technique. Yi Zheng Bang also understood Tao Si Yong's predicament and stated that they would first try Qin Da Di's method, and then discuss countermeasures with the two superiors.
Subsequently, Tao Si Yong went to find Qin Da Di and asked him about the stalling flight. Qin Da Di openly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of this type of flight. Although it was an excellent technique, the requirements were extremely strict. The aircraft needed violent acceleration during landing and takeoff, even violent impact with the ground. If the slightest mistake was made, it would cause great harm.
It was for this reason that Qin Da Di told Tao Si Yong that his previous flight was not a true stalling flight, but a high-altitude accelerated descent, not a direct impact on the carrier. However, this time the experiment was to be conducted on the aircraft carrier. If the plane fell onto the carrier's deck, it would undoubtedly result in the destruction of the aircraft and the crew, and cause great damage to the carrier. The difficulties faced were incalculable.
As per Yizhen Bang's requirements, the test flight squadron convened a technical breakthrough conference and invited experts from CSSC and AVIC to attend. President Liang and President Zhou hoped that the test pilots would first identify the problems. Qin Da Di stated that they have reached a bottleneck and cannot find the correct test flight path - how the aircraft can use the lights and point-landing to fly out in a straight line is one of the key problems that needs to be overcome.
Xie Zhen Yu suddenly posed a question to the two presidents, wanting to know if the aircraft, arresting gear, and aircraft carrier deck could withstand high-speed shipboard landing using the Harrier-style flight mode. Qin Da Di immediately rejected the idea, but Yu Tao supported Xie Zhen Yu's question, stating that even though the Harrier-style flight is very difficult, it is still worth trying.
The two presidents said they did not have enough confidence, and hoped to provide scientific research data as soon as possible. Qin Da Di publicly pointed out the dangers, stating that aside from himself, no one in the test flight squadron has the capability to attempt the Harrier-style flight, as they do not know the flight altitude and specific parameters. The meeting ended abruptly, but Xie Zhen Yu and Yu Tao saw a glimmer of hope, at least Qin Da Di has started doing his homework. The most urgent task is to find the appropriate flight attack angle to avoid stall and the aircraft nose slamming into the carrier deck.
The two discussed, believing Qin Da Di would make his own decision. That night, Yu Tao dreamed of himself piloting the aircraft and competing with Qin Da Di. Likewise, Qin Da Di dreamed of attempting the Harrier-style flight, nearly causing a major accident due to improper operation, abruptly waking from the nightmare, his mental state and psychological issues more severe than before.
The next morning, Director Liu and Xia Chu found Tao Si Yong, informing him of Qin Da Di's situation, wanting to alleviate Qin Da Di's psychological issues by understanding the root causes. Tao Si Yong briefly mentioned Qin Da Di's family situation and the difficulties he currently faces. Xia Chu considered this a very serious matter, as the Harrier-style flight could cause Qin Da Di's emotions to become highly tense, requiring close observation.
Xia Chu casually asked about Xie Zhen Yu's situation, and learned from Tao Si Yong that Xie's father passed away prematurely, causing him to suffer long-term bullying in school since childhood. Later, his mother passed away when he was in middle school, dealing him a huge blow. This made him realize he must study hard and strive to be the best at everything, leading to his current good performance.
Xia Chu believed this state is also not conducive to Xie Zhen Yu's personality formation and development, and that he would face doubled negative emotions when encountering setbacks. She felt he should receive further psychological counseling to help him find and accept his true self.
