Episode 37 recap: Ou Xiao An Obtains Evidence of the Bridge's Crimes
In episode 37, Nakamura recounted his past to Ou Xiao An. He used to work in the research lab at the Bridge, but he discovered the activities there were inhumane and completely contradictory to his Marxist beliefs, so he secretly slipped away. He later met Lou Ming Yuan, who saw Nakamura was a clever person and recruited him to participate in a secret mission called the Sundial Operation, which involved stealing the mysterious Falling Cherry Blossom Plan documents.
During the theft, Nakamura narrowly avoided being caught by the Japanese. In a moment of quick thinking, he stuffed the documents in his pocket and considered burning down the document room to cover his tracks, but he was ultimately apprehended. Before his capture, Lou Ming Yuan told Nakamura that he was a communist, and planned to have Nakamura evacuate with his communist military intelligence (Wustatong) brothers.
However, Nakamura couldn't withstand the Bridge's harsh interrogation and ended up revealing everything he knew. Taking advantage of this, Li Shao Tang swooped in to replace Nakamura's role, using Nakamura's code to contact the communists and infiltrate the Wustatong.
When Ou Xiao An learned of this, he realized his mission was to expose Li Shao Tang's true identity, capture the Bridge, and disrupt the Falling Cherry Blossom Plan. The Bridge had originally intended to use Li Shao Tang as a triple agent to gather intel on the Sundial Operation, but they didn't expect Li Shao Tang to also be working with the communists. Li Shao Tang then convinced the Bridge not to trust Ou Xiao An, causing the Bridge to become suspicious of Li Shao Tang's growing influence within the Wustatong.
To gain the Bridge's trust, Li Shao Tang offered to hand over the Falling Cherry Blossom Plan documents. While imprisoned, Ye Xuan Min secretly told Ou Xiao An that Li Shao Tang was a spy, and urged him to escape and find Old He. This reminded Ou Xiao An of his past, and Nakamura had shown him photos as evidence of the Bridge's wrongdoings.
Though Li Shao Tang assured the Bridge the Falling Cherry Blossom Plan was secure, the Bridge was still uneasy, as it was his life's work. Li Shao Tang then placated the Bridge by promising to provide the coordinates of the chemical weapons for the Nationalist army once they returned to Japan.
Now Ou Xiao An fully understands Lou Ming Yuan's beliefs and remembers his own decision in prison to join the communist party, as well as Ye Xuan Min's instructions.
He went back and asked Qin Mo Qing if she knew Old He, wanting to see him. Wang Qiu Shui heard that Da Qiao was still alive, so he had Qin Mo Qing expose Da Qiao's crimes publicly, so that he couldn't run away.
Just then, an American reporter came to the prisoner of war camp for an interview, and someone recognized Da Qiao. This news quickly spread, causing an uproar both domestically and internationally, with people clamoring for Da Qiao to be re-tried.
Shen Cong Wu was so angry that he was jumping up and down, saying it was everyone's fault. Wei Qing Ming shifted the responsibility to Li Shao Tang, saying he didn't know Da Qiao was still alive.
Shen Cong Wu met with Li Shao Tang privately and told him to come up with a strategy to continue carrying out the plan within three days.
When Yu Guang Qi was verifying the reporter's identity, he felt there was a mole within the Juntong (Military Intelligence Agency), and Li Shao Tang was the first one he suspected, pointing the finger at Qin Mo Qing.
Ou Xiao An officially joined the Communist Party after meeting with Wang Qiu Shui. He handed Li Shao Tang's information to Shen Cong Wu, but Shen Cong Wu didn't believe him and even suspected he was colluding with the Communists.
Ou Xiao An said Li Shao Tang was a Japanese spy, but he ended up being the one suspected. Shen Cong Wu told him to perjure himself against Da Qiao during the public trial, and not to worry about Li Shao Tang's situation. Wen Yi Shan also told him to prioritize dealing with the Communists for the greater good.
But Ou Xiao An refused. He handed over evidence against Da Qiao to Qin Mo Qing, planning to livestream the reveal of the truth during the public trial.
Qin Mo Qing felt he was being too impulsive without considering the consequences, but Ou Xiao An had made up his mind. He knew that the Juntong and the Americans were scheming behind the scenes, and he wanted to expose the truth for all to see.
