Episode 40 recap: Ou Xiao An Resolves the Chongqing Crisis
In episode 40, Ou Xiao An was inspecting the "dangerous goods" that were about to be destroyed when he sensed something was off. He boldly approached without any protective gear and discovered that they were just smoke grenades - a false alarm. He quickly called in his team, turned the boxes over, but all they found was more smoke. Ou Xiao An suspected that this was the handiwork of the old fox Shen Cong Wu, who wanted to extricate himself from the entanglement between the Nationalists and Communists, while also exposing the fragility of their internal cooperation.
Behind the scenes, Shen Cong Wu had colluded with Zhou Ruo Fei and Qian Huihe to secretly swap out the real explosives. He hadn't breathed a word of this to Wei Qing Ming and the others.
Ou Xiao An was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan. He urgently reported to Wang Qiu Shui. With the victory rally about to begin, they couldn't afford to be absent due to this insignificant incident - that would give their opponents an opening. Ou Xiao An decided to take matters into his own hands and guard the venue as a guardian angel.
He and his brothers scoured the streets all night and did manage to uncover a few toxic gas grenades, but the quantity was pitifully small compared to the intelligence reports. Time was running out, and the rally's bell was about to toll.
Wei Qing Ming was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, wanting to contact Shen Cong Wu for clarification, but the man had seemingly vanished.
In the rally venue, the Communist big shot Li Huainan's arrival was met with a tidal wave of applause and cheers. Director Zhang personally welcomed him, creating an atmosphere that was both lively and tense.
Ou Xiao An, meanwhile, had discovered a few more toxic gas grenades in a hidden corner and extinguished the sparks of a potential conflagration. Little did he know that the true crisis lay hidden in the air raid shelter - Qian Huihe's meticulously crafted "Falling Cherry Blossom Trap", just waiting to spring.
Miao Jiang, following the plan, had made his way to the air raid shelter, intending to detonate the final trump card. But Ou Xiao An was no pushover. Relying on his instincts and an old map, he managed to track Miao Jiang down. The two faced off, the tension thicker than toxic gas. Though Ou Xiao An took some hits, his sheer determination ultimately subdued Miao Jiang.
Seeing the tide turning against him, Miao Jiang played his final card - the "Sika Deer" - and boasted about turning Chongqing into a ghost town. But his hubris was his downfall, and he ended up crashing hard.
Ou Xiao An, heedless of his own injuries, fought with all his might to disable the bomb. After a tremendous effort, he succeeded in nipping the disaster in the bud.
The rally proceeded smoothly, with Li Huainan's passionate speech igniting the audience's blood. The new era of Nationalist-Communist cooperation had officially begun. Ou Xiao An emerged from the air raid shelter, battered but proud and fulfilled, his spirit fortified more than any medicine could provide.
A month later, Ou Xiao An visited his former adversary, Li Shao Tang. This man had changed, now a harmless, simpleminded soul content with a life in the sun. Hearing of his comrades' fates, he even laughed - a laugh tinged with resignation and self-mockery. Ou Xiao An took the chance to share how he had painstakingly unraveled the "Falling Cherry Blossom Plan" and ultimately brought them all down.
Though Li Shao Tang had gone mad, his crimes could not be absolved, and he received the punishment he deserved.
