Episode 3 recap: # Encountering Obstacles in Demolishing Illegal Structures

As the workday ended, Zheng Xiang Yang told everyone to go home. Xia Mei Zhen mentioned that there was an exam the next day, which He Jing Yun and Jiang Chuan both needed to prepare for. Zheng Xiang Yang, feeling a bit left out, insisted that if there was an exam, he should participate too. Xia Mei Zhen quickly clarified that it wasn’t his concern and suggested he not intrude.

He Jing Yun and Jiang Chuan eagerly asked Xia Mei Zhen what the exam would cover. She explained that the office had a strict no-dating policy. While she understood that young people might develop feelings for each other, the rules were clear: if anyone started dating, one of them would have to be reassigned.

Both He Jing Yun and Jiang Chuan quickly insisted that they weren't dating and would never be interested in each other. They were just working late and wanted to know more about the demolition situation. He Jing Yun explained that they were talking about removing illegal structures and that any building violating regulations needed to be taken down.

Man Tai, however, argued that there were no illegal structures in his area; the issues were historical and should be resolved with a historical perspective. He Jing Yun reiterated that no matter the circumstances, illegal structures had to go—there was a strict policy in place.

As the conversation continued, Man Tai grew increasingly angry, threatening to retaliate against anyone who dared to demolish his property. To everyone’s surprise, he pulled out a ping-pong paddle instead of a weapon, leaving He Jing Yun and Jiang Chuan shocked.

The next day, after hearing about the incident, Zheng Xiang Yang suggested that He Jing Yun take a couple of days off. He felt that Man Tai was generally a reasonable person and considered doing some outreach to resolve the issue.

Zheng Xiang Yang went to find Man Tai, who was having car trouble. Zheng Xiang Yang helped him fix it and brought up the demolition issue. He explained that Man Tai had initially set up a small shop due to his low-income status, but it posed safety risks, and it was time for it to be removed.

Man Tai still disagreed, and Zheng Xiang Yang suggested that he should apologize to He Jing Yun. Zheng Xiang Yang felt they should talk to Section Chief Yang from the street office to understand the situation better. When Section Chief Yang inquired about the demolition, Zheng Xiang Yang explained that half of the residents were opposed, with some questioning the validity of the demolition and others concerned about the procedures.

Section Chief Yang mentioned the importance of adhering to regulations and advised Zheng Xiang Yang and the team to continue their outreach efforts. Jiang Chuan approached Man Tai, insisting that he should apologize to He Jing Yun. Xia Mei Zhen also spoke to He Jing Yun about the situation, suggesting she take a break, mentioning that she had similar struggles when starting her job and eventually got used to it.

Jiang Chuan then discussed his intention to resign with He Jing Yun, expressing that he didn’t want her to resign as well. He later informed Zheng Xiang Yang about He Jing Yun's resignation plans, hoping Zheng Xiang Yang could persuade her to reconsider. However, Zheng Xiang Yang confidently stated that He Jing Yun wouldn’t quit.

Zheng Xiang Yang and Jiang Chuan visited Man Tai's home to check on the situation, only to find a group of over ten people who had entered and never come out. They searched Man Tai's house but didn’t see anyone, leaving them puzzled about what was happening. They also checked the back door but found no one there.

Zheng Xiang Yang shared the video footage with Xia Mei Zhen and the others, and she agreed that the situation was very strange. She urged them to investigate further and insisted they needed to get to the bottom of the matter.
