Episode 5 recap: Lan Jing Hui and Ling Dong - One-on-One Mentorship
As Lan Jing Hui was boastfully recounting his brilliant conversation with Peng, Xu Meng Yu arrived in the classroom. At first Lan Jing Hui thought Xu Meng Yu was there to submit a friendship letter, but she simply sat at Xu Meng Yu's desk. Xu Meng Yu's arrival caused a stir among the entire class, as everyone seemed to like her. The boys submitted their friendship letters, and the girls asked her all sorts of questions. Xu Meng Yu was the student council president, while Chen Lu Yang was only the vice-president, so she had quite a reputation at school.
While everyone was busy greeting Xu Meng Yu, Ling Dong did not approach her. Instead, Xu Meng Yu's gaze fell on Ling Dong. During lunchtime, Fang Hai specifically went to the cafeteria to find Lan Jing Hui and others, announcing that he had decided to pair Lan Jing Hui and Ling Dong in a one-on-one mentorship program. Lan Jing Hui was about to object, but Fang Hai shut him down, believing Lan Jing Hui was getting the better deal. Lan Jing Hui grumbled about Ling Dong not refusing, but Ling Dong felt he had no reason to refuse.
Lan Jing Hui did not actually want to self-study, so he had Xiao Xiao Hua take his place. Ling Dong saw through this and specifically went to find Xiao Xiao Hua, asking if he wanted to improve his grades. Xiao Xiao Hua immediately agreed, and Ling Dong asked him to do a favor - Xiao Xiao Hua delivered a note to Lan Jing Hui, threatening to tell everyone that Lan Jing Hui was Ling Dong's nephew if he didn't go study. Frightened, Lan Jing Hui immediately went to the study room to find Ling Dong.
That evening, just as Lan Jing Hui was about to go play basketball with Ma Yi Ming, Ling Dong discovered him and insisted he go back to do his homework. Lan Jing Hui tried to sneak out by climbing over the wall, but was caught by Ling Dong and the dean. Reluctantly, Lan Jing Hui had to obediently go study.
That night, Lan Jing Hui dreamed that Xiao Xiao Hua appeared on the staircase, waving to him. When Lan Jing Hui went to the classroom, Xiao Xiao Hua was gone, replaced by a blinding light. As Lan Jing Hui tried to escape, he saw the walls covered in homework. Just as he tried to leave, he saw Ling Dong's eyes, startling him. Ling Dong's ominous face then appeared, demanding Lan Jing Hui complete all the homework, causing Lan Jing Hui to wake up in a cold sweat.
The school was holding a talent competition, which they participated in every year, but had never won. Fang Hai required each student to submit a video entry. Lan Jing Hui suggested teaching Ling Dong some fancy basketball moves, but Ling Dong refused.
Xia Qing Tian was going to record a poetry recitation, while the clueless Xiao Xiao Hua didn't know what to do. Xia Qing Tian advised Xiao Xiao Hua that no one really cared what they practiced, and they wouldn't be selected anyway, so they could just submit anything for the assignment.
After finding out that Xiao Xiao Hua didn't know what to record, Lan Jing Hui brought Xiao Xiao Hua to the rooftop and told her to just record a video of herself dancing or singing. However, Xiao Xiao Hua was stiff and couldn't sing well, so her singing just sounded like noise.
After recording, Lan Jing Hui left to find Ling Dong, and Ling Dong demanded that Lan Jing Hui complete four assignments in exchange for getting his phone back. The next day, Lan Jing Hui recorded Ling Dong while he was lecturing on stage, and also followed him around recording while he was reading. Lan Jing Hui then edited the footage, putting Ling Dong's face onto his own dance video and publishing it.
Soon, Ling Dong's performance skyrocketed to the top ten. Lan Jing Hui's goal was to get Ling Dong to sign up for the competition. Quickly, everyone came to vote, making Ling Dong the number one contender. Xu Meng Yu approached Ling Dong, offering to help since she had participated in the competition before, but Ling Dong coldly refused her.
Lan Jing Hui also edited and uploaded Xiao Xiao Hua's video. Although her singing was not great, her classmates saw that she was seriously pursuing what she wanted to do. Xiao Xiao Hua's video soon surpassed Xu Meng Yu for the second place spot, much to Xu Meng Yu's displeasure. Xia Qing Tian, however, thought it was normal for Xiao Xiao Hua to overtake Xu Meng Yu.
Ma Yi Ming wanted to give out flyers to get votes for his crush Xu Meng Yu, but she scolded him and threw the flyers on the ground. Xia Qing Tian happened to see Ma Yi Ming picking up the discarded flyers.
Lan Jing Hui's goal was to get Ling Dong to participate in the competition, so Ling Dong would have less time to focus on his own performance. But when Ling Dong came to confront Lan Jing Hui, the announcement was made that Ling Dong had withdrawn from the competition, allowing Xiao Xiao Hua to become the new number one contender.
