Episode 5 recap: The whereabouts of Jiang Na remain a mystery.
Jiang Guang Ming carefully examined the handwriting on the manuscript paper, and found to his shock that it was identical, word for word, to the opening of the novel "Black Rain". The intense workload had left Jiang Guang Ming feeling overwhelmed when he uncovered this crucial clue, causing him to feel dizzy and disoriented.
A year ago, Jiang Na had thoughtfully brought manuscript paper as a gift for Tang Xun, and in return, Tang Xun had given her an autographed book. Afterward, Jiang Na helped him keep his pet dog a secret from the hotel, and would even walk the dog for him during her free time, and their relationship grew closer.
Returning to the present, Liu Qiang called Jiang Guang Ming to report that Zhang Qing had a college friend who had inquired about her before the incident, but since the friend had no permanent residence or job, they had not yet been able to locate this person.
Lately, Jiang Guang Ming had been feeling sleepy not just in the mornings, but also in the afternoons, though due to work demands, she had not paid it much mind. Little Zhang, who fed the stray cats near the hotel, told Jiang Guang Ming that Jiang Na had always loved animals, often feeding the strays, and had even gotten into trouble over a stray dog before.
At first, Jiang Guang Ming didn't think much of it, but when he returned to his hotel room, he decided to go check. Just then, Shi Luo was also heading to the front desk, so they went together. With Little Zhang's help, they confirmed that the small dog Jiang Na had been walking was most likely the same one that Zhang Qing had lost, with the leash matching as well.
Jiang Guang Ming also learned from Little Zhang about some other items Jiang Na had left behind, including a novel by Tang Xun. Jiang Na's diary had a receipt showing she had previously borrowed money from Little Zhang when she was being extorted, and had later repaid him after receiving her paycheck.
Shi Luo produced the postcard taken from Tang Xun's home, and the handwriting matched Jiang Na's. They surmised that the friend Jiang Na had been walking the dog for was likely Tang Xun, but why would Tang Xun have taken Qin Jiang's dog to Fang Hai?
According to Tang Xun's wife Yang Hui, Tang Xun had not brought a dog home, so the whereabouts of this dog and its leash are likely known only to Jiang Na. The publisher's CEO had lavished praise on Gu Ji Ming's new novel, but when Gu Ji Ming probed further, he realized the CEO had never actually read the book.
Gu Ji Ming was a bit angry after hearing other employees comment that his novel was not as good as "Black Rain". His ego was hurt, so he demanded to delay the publication of the novel. Little Zhang told Jiang Guang Ming that there was a manager named He Peng from a group buying website who had come to the hotel inquiring about Jiang Na.
Shi Luo immediately called Liu Qiang and asked him to help find He Peng's contact phone number and address. The two went to see He Peng to understand the situation, and unexpectedly found a photo of He Peng and Gu Ji Ming together, as they had previously shared a rental. Jiang Guang Ming further inquired with He Peng about Gu Ji Ming, and He Peng said that Gu Ji Ming was a good person, hardworking and steadfast, and very loyal to his friends.
When asked if Gu Ji Ming knew Jiang Na, He Peng denied it. As the investigation deepened, the case became more complex, with more people involved. Learning that they needed to stay overnight in Changhe, Gu Ji Ming claimed to be sick, so Su Zhen Zhen went alone to attend her cousin's wedding.
He Peng contacted Gu Ji Ming, and the two agreed to have a meal together. During the meal, He Peng mentioned the police and what he knew about Gu Ji Ming, and Gu Ji Ming gave a simple explanation. Gu Ji Ming got drunk, and He Peng sent him home.
Su Zhen Zhen did not stay in Changhe, but rushed back immediately, and happened to run into He Peng taking Gu Ji Ming home. Gu Ji Ming had no choice but to admit that he had lied about being sick, but Su Zhen Zhen didn't seem angry. The manager asked Little Zhang to clean out the storage room, which included Jiang Na's belongings. Jiang Guang Ming had her put Jiang Na's belongings in her own place.
It was this action that unexpectedly led Jiang Guang Ming to discover that the handwriting on the drafts was visible through the paper. She used a pencil to make a print, and was shocked to find that the text left on the drafts was exactly the same as the beginning of "Black Rain". Overwhelmed by this unexpected discovery, Jiang Guang Ming suddenly became dizzy and fainted.
