Episode 19 recap: Lv Jing Proactively Deploys to Manage the Locust Plague
In Episode 19, Mr. Huaishan and Ru Jing arrived at the Qin King's residence, where Changsheng and Lv Jing greeted them at the door. During the meal, Changsheng tried not to be disruptive, but inadvertently ended up tearing Ru Jing's clothes and spraining her own ankle. Changsheng felt deeply apologetic, but Lv Jing knew it was unintentional, and Mr. Huaishan was not upset, so Lv Jing told Changsheng not to worry about it.
Recently, Xiao Zi Lv had not been coming to the Princess's Residence, making it unusually quiet. Lv Guan was copying poetic lines, and although he made mistakes in the spacing, there was a certain flavor to it. Lingzhi made a joking remark, but Lv Guan immediately changed his expression and told Lingzhi to leave. Ru Jing once again expressed her feelings to Lv Jing, but as always, Lv Jing rejected her.
Before meeting Changsheng, Lv Jing did not even like Ru Jing. Now that he has Changsheng in his heart, he is even less likely to reciprocate Ru Jing's feelings. Ru Jing was deeply saddened, and Changsheng happened to come by and see her crying, but Ru Jing simply left hastily without saying much.
Lv Ke suddenly visited, surprising Ru Jing. Huaishan told Lv Jing that the locust plague in Dongpei would sweep through the Great Tang in less than three days. Lv Jing had planned to report to the Emperor and have the people quickly gather the harvest, but Huaishan shook his head, saying this plan was viable but should not be implemented. The crops are not yet fully mature, and prematurely gathering the harvest would surely incite public resentment.
Even though the locusts have not arrived and the people have not seen them, all they can see is that early harvesting would reduce the yield. But for the greater good, Lv Jing must brave the disapproval of the people. Changsheng told Lv Jing the story of the prince who supported the fish, giving him inspiration. Perhaps Lv Jing could emulate that prince and negotiate with the people. Lv Ke deliberately tried to sow discord between Ru Jing and Lv Jing, and also attempted to worsen Ru Jing's impression of Changsheng.
Ru Jing did not linger for long, but the speaker had intention, and the listener naturally cared. Ru Jing returned to the Qin King's mansion with a heavy heart. Ru Jing saw Lv Jing and Changsheng chasing and playing, and thus confirmed that what Lv Ke said was true - Lv Jing was indeed lost in the pleasures of love, heedless of the locust disaster.
The next day, Lv Jing proposed to the Great Tang King to collect grain early, and stated that he was willing to open the treasury to subsidize the common people, and as a prince, he was willing to contribute 40% of the grain to replenish the treasury. The Fifth Prince Lv Ke and the Second Prince Lv Hou also had to follow suit and donate grain. Lv Hou felt that his father the King only praised Lv Jing, and he himself did not receive any good treatment, so he was quite dissatisfied.
Changsheng and Jin Yan calculated the grain reserves in the Qin King's mansion, but no matter how they calculated, the mansion could only provide 30% at most. For the remaining 10%, Changsheng used her own dowry. Jin Yan felt that this dowry was the foundation of Changsheng's standing in the Great Tang, but Changsheng corrected him, saying that her standing in the Great Tang was not because of the dowry, but because of Lv Jing.
Ru Jing always saw the affectionate relationship between Changsheng and Lv Jing, and could not see the efforts Changsheng had made to help Lv Jing resolve the locust disaster. Mr. Huaishan, as an impartial observer, directly told Ru Jing that she should not have come back, as her "kindness" towards Lv Jing might actually be a harm, but Ru Jing at this time could not understand the meaning behind these words.
Geerdian pointed out to Lv Ke that if he tampered with the grain harvest of the common people, the 40% of grain the Qin King's mansion donated could also be increased, and even though the Qin King's mansion was large and prosperous, it could not withstand such turmoil. You Yong hurriedly led people to go out, and Changsheng inquired and learned that the farmers were asking for exorbitant prices, and Lv Jing did not dare to promise them, so the farmers surrounded Lv Jing.
Changsheng wanted to go and help, but was stopped by Ru Jing, yet Changsheng went past her directly. In the evening, Changsheng and Lv Jing returned, both injured, and Lv Jing was only concerned about Changsheng, not even looking at the dishes Ru Jing had prepared. Xiaozi Lv was called over to look at Changsheng's sprained foot, and Lv Guan also came.
After the two sides finished talking and left, Xiaozi Lv and Lv Guan were both hesitant, but they both turned back, and Lv Guan put aside his resentment and no longer avoided his unique laughter in front of Xiaozi Lv.
