Episode 3 recap: The Betrayal of a Carefully Laid Plan
In the third episode, as night fell, the lantern festival in Fuyu City was in full swing. Princess Changsheng was hatching a plan to confess her feelings to Yang Wulang, hoping to catch him off guard by directly telling him, "I've decided on you for life!" If that didn't work, she planned to enlist the help of the storyteller Shengtiangong to win Yang Wulang's heart amidst the warm and inviting atmosphere of the lantern festival.
However, fate had other plans - Yang Wulang unexpectedly said he was not feeling well and would not be attending, foiling Princess Changsheng's carefully laid scheme. Meanwhile, Xiao Zilv and Yang Wulang were having a lively conversation, and Yang Wulang even specially handed a flower to Xiao Zilv, a gesture that spoke volumes. Xiao Zilv merely smiled, fully understanding the underlying meaning.
Lv Jing had also been busy. He had found out that Yang Wulang liked the Guanshan Qing flower, so he promptly bought up all the Guanshan Qing in the inn. When Yang Wulang came to have tea, Lv Jing seized the opportunity to strike up a conversation about the local customs and culture of Fuyu City.
On the other side, Wise Consort had gathered the court ladies to teach them the etiquette of the imperial court. Princess Changsheng was late due to a traffic jam, and the Wise Consort, who already disliked her, found an excuse to send her to clean the palace gardens. Xiao Jin tried to intervene and help Changsheng, but ended up being dragged along to work as a gardener as well.
Princess Guangde and Princess Changsheng were not on good terms, and they had made a bet to see who would get married first from the list of potential brides. The loser would either give a hundred taels of gold as a wedding gift or go through the marriage themselves. After Xiao Zilv entered the palace, he deliberately spread rumors among the palace maids, causing Changsheng to be the target of gossip, though she was already accustomed to such treatment.
Lv Jing brought Yang Wulang to the palace, as Lv Jing had previously praised Changsheng, and Yang Wulang agreed to attend the lantern festival that evening. Back at the estate, Lv Jing kindly warned Changsheng that while Yang Wulang seemed nice, he might not be her destined match.
At the lantern festival, Changsheng tried her best to get Xiao Zilv to leave, finally having a chance to be alone with Yang Wulang. However, Yang Wulang was called away for an urgent matter, leaving Lv Jing behind, creating an extremely awkward situation.
The storyteller Shengtiangong further added to the chaos by mistaking Lv Jing for Yang Wulang and spouting nonsense, much to Changsheng's frustration as he remained oblivious to the error. Changsheng's plan to confess her feelings had completely fallen apart.
As the three walked together, the atmosphere was tense to the extreme. While passing a lantern riddle booth, Changsheng left a riddle, which Lv Jing easily solved. The lantern festival had many activities, and besides the lantern riddles, there was also an impressive acrobatic performance that drew a large crowd.
At that moment, an assassin quietly approached. Lv Jing, with his sharp senses, detected the danger and quickly pulled Changsheng away, cleverly throwing a handful of candies onto the stage to distract the crowd and foil the assassin's plan. Lv Jing used his agility to swiftly escape the scene with Changsheng. While grateful, Changsheng also felt a little embarrassed and warned Lv Jing not to take such risks in the future.
Just as Lv Jing was boasting about his bravery, he noticed a spider crawling on Changsheng's shoulder, but Changsheng calmly grabbed the spider with her bare hand, leaving Lv Jing both amused and bewildered.
On the other side, Princess Guangde had accidentally wandered away from her maid while admiring the lanterns outside the palace and was accosted by some drunks. Coincidentally, Changsheng happened to be passing by and heard Guangde's cries for help, setting the stage for a classic "hero rescues the damsel in distress" scenario.
