Episode 5 recap: Two Ladies Fiercely Chase After Zhao Huaibi
In Episode 5, it's Changsheng's birthday. Lv Jing remembered that Changsheng really loves fireworks, so she sent You Yong and You Mou to buy a bunch to surprise her. Changsheng and Xiao Jin were strolling in the palace when they ran into Guang De, who was surprisingly quiet and not causing any trouble. They found out that Guang De had taken a liking to someone - the heroic Zhao Huaibi, who had saved her life at the Lantern Festival.
When Changsheng heard this, she almost spit out her tea, because Zhao Huaibi was also her love interest! Guang De had initially wanted to compete fairly with Changsheng, even giving her some books, but after learning that Changsheng also liked Zhao Huaibi, her mood darkened, and she took the books back. The Emperor wanted to arrange a marriage between Xiao Zi Lv and Guang De, but Xiao Zi Lv directly refused due to her leg problems, creating an awkward situation.
However, Guang De's heart was set on Zhao Huaibi, and she was quite pleased with Xiao Zi Lv's refusal of the marriage. But Xiao Zi Lv didn't want Changsheng and Zhao Huaibi to be together, so she planned to team up with Guang De to stir up trouble.
When Xiao Zi Lv returned home, Xiao Jin was anxious, knowing that her brother was interested in Changsheng. But Changsheng understood Xiao Jin and didn't hold it against her. To attract Zhao Huaibi's attention, Changsheng decided to learn fishing, and she got Lv Jing's help. Lv Jing helped Changsheng make a grand entrance, playing the flute, but Guang De wasn't about to be outdone, and she came on stage playing the pipa, the two ladies fiercely competing.
Although Guang De managed to lure Zhao Huaibi into the boat cabin first, Changsheng's fishing skills still managed to capture Zhao Huaibi's attention. In reality, Changsheng didn't know how to fish at all - Lv Jing had secretly arranged for fish to be placed in the river. Guang De discovered this and mocked Changsheng mercilessly.
Undeterred, Changsheng planned to win the next round. Zhao Huaibi, surrounded by the two ladies, was thoroughly enjoying himself, his belly almost bursting. He eventually made an excuse to slip away. Meanwhile, the Emperor was still agonizing over the choice of bride for the alliance, and the army was already pressuring Lv Jing to report back, but Lv Jing remained calm and unflustered.
Lv Jing intentionally mentioned in front of Xiao Zi Lv that the Prince had taken a liking to Changsheng, which immediately upset Xiao Zi Lv, who started bringing up old reasons why Changsheng shouldn't marry. Lv Jing calmly rebutted, saying the Prince didn't believe those superstitions. The next day, when Changsheng went to the army camp to see Zhao Huaibi, Lv Jing tagged along to investigate the Emperor's army. Coincidentally, Guang De also showed up, both of them bringing gifts for Zhao Huaibi. Changsheng's gifts were simple but handmade with heartfelt care.
In the camp, there was a wild horse that no one could tame. When Zhao Huaibi tried, he even fell off. Seeing this, Changsheng stepped forward to give it a try. Guang De quickly suggested that Zhao Huaibi teach Changsheng how to ride, hoping to get closer to him. Lv Jing took the opportunity to wander the camp and discovered the soldiers were practicing with long spears. In the end, Zhao Huaibi and Guang De rode the horse together, with Changsheng losing again. But with Lv Jing's guidance, Changsheng didn't take it too much to heart.
