Episode 4 recap: The Cause of Ajiao's Death Revealed
In Episode 4, Yu Xing Bai reflects that this is the 49th time since his wife went missing. Each time, he books two plane tickets from Osaka, but to his sorrow, the seat next to him remains empty, with no sign of his wife. Yu Xing Bai secretly vows that he will find his wife and never give up.
Jing Hao Ran has been gloomy and heartbroken since Taiyu's departure. Fan Pei Qing complains to Yu Xing Bai that the three of them are now all alone. Yu Xing Bai disagrees with this assessment, but Fan Pei Qing feels that their friend's repeated hopeful searches for his wife only end in disappointment, which is not worth it.
However, Yu Xing Bai believes that just having hope is the motivation to keep going. He sees Miao Nana having an episode and decides to take her to the hospital, where he notices she is taking an addictive medication. Miao Nana later asks him not to tell anyone about this, or she will be in a difficult situation.
Fan Pei Qing expresses that their group of friends has changed since the incident with Officer Ajiao, who died while apprehending a thief just minutes after saying they should go eat hotpot. Everyone is still struggling to move on. Fang Kaixin even suspects that her bad luck caused Ajiao's death.
Qian Ming has become increasingly silent and withdrawn since his father's passing and is about to leave with his mother. Jing Hao Ran encourages his friend to be more positive, as Ajiao wouldn't have wanted him to be this way. Fang Kaixin feels she brings disaster to her friends and wants to leave, but a coin toss by a colleague decides that she should stay.
Soon, a new murder case emerges - construction workers find a decomposing body in the sewer. Yu Xing Bai and Fan Pei Qing go to the scene and see the victim hanging upside down. Wang Jing is unable to handle the stench of the sewer. Fang Kaixin inquires about the victim, Chen Wei, and discovers his family is highly unusual, with his mother being two years younger than him.
Fan Pei Qing's meticulous forensic analysis reveals that Ajiao's cause of death was a sudden heart attack, which shocks Jing Hao Ran and Ajiao's wife, as they were unaware of his heart condition. Ajiao's wife blames herself and her husband's boss for his death.
Fang Kaixin feels relieved that Ajiao's death is not connected to her, but then realizes how selfish that is. During an interview, Fan Pei Qing is asked a question that triggers her psychological issues.
Fan Pei Qing's best friend wants to write an article about solving the case but, due to confidentiality, can only discuss the investigative process with her. While taking a walk, Fan Pei Qing encounters the pharmacy employee who looks similar to the person who harmed her years ago. They end up sitting down together, and Fan Pei Qing has a momentary suspicion, but is unable to obtain any information from the person.
