Episode 4 recap: Li Zhang Huan Goes to Bamalah

In episode 4, Li Zhang Huan and Li Zhi Wei meet up at the airport, and Zhiwei thoughtfully brought Li Zhang Huan's commonly used medications. As soon as they boarded the flight, they ran into Zhao Qi Feng, the third secretary at the Chinese embassy in Bamalah, who was returning from a brief vacation back home. Zhao the secretary enthusiastically described Bamalah, saying it has breathtaking scenery and dense forests.

However, a nearby businessman interjected, saying the forests also mean lots of mosquitoes. He jokingly commented that the four of them looked like the "Journey to the West" crew. Li Zhang Huan laughed and said he was there to "deliver scriptures", not to acquire them.

Upon arrival in Bamalah, the welcoming ceremony at the airport was lively. But Li Zhang Huan discovered that a critical crate containing fungal cultures and his late brother Li Zhan's belongings was missing.

This was a major issue. With Wai's help, they learned the crate had been mistakenly taken by the Wisan tribe. When Zhao Qi Feng heard this, he grimaced, explaining that the Wisan and Nicalara tribes were sworn enemies, so retrieving the crate would be difficult.

Wai and the others went to the Wisan village with trepidation. They were stopped at the gate, the atmosphere tense and confrontational. Li Zhang Huan quickly had the translator explain they were just there to retrieve the crate with the fungal cultures and his brother's relics.

The Wisan people relented, but only allowed one Nicalara person and one Chinese person to enter, escorted by a female guide. Li Zhang Huan insisted on going in, and Weilong and the others couldn't stop him. So Weilong, Hang, and Li Zhang Huan went in with the female guide.

After some difficulties, they found the crate in a cave. Luckily, the cold cave acted like a natural refrigerator, and the fungal cultures were still alive, relieving Li Zhang Huan.

Meanwhile, Zhiwei was anxiously waiting at home, as the flight should have already arrived, but Li Zhang Huan hadn't called. Her mother also called, worried. Zhiwei tried to reassure her that she would follow up.

As Li Zhang Huan's group prepared to return, he had Zhao Qi Feng call Zhiwei to let her know they were okay. When Zhao called, Zhiwei bombarded him with questions about how they got there, what transportation they used, and where they were staying. Zhao could only respond one by one, also providing Zhiwei with a backup phone number.

At their accommodations, Wai explained there was just one generator powering the village and his home. There was an insulated cabinet in the office where they could store the fungal cultures. Looking at the basic conditions, Hang grumbled a bit, but Li Zhang Huan encouraged them, saying the purpose of this poverty alleviation trip was precisely because conditions wouldn't be as good as home, although much better than previous rural visits.

With no food options, they ended up just having instant noodles for a meal. But Li Zhang Huan remained optimistic, saying even this was quite nice.
