Episode 22 recap: Xiao Mei's Confession to Yu Shun Is Rejected
In episode 22, Jin Zhan and Yu Shu's friends are trying to figure out why their fathers are so angry with each other. They don't know what exactly happened between the two adults. Du Sha speculates that the parents must have had a conflict, but in reality, each father secretly likes the other's child.
Yu Shu comes up with a plan. Jin Zhan goes to speak with Yu Shu's father, hoping he will reveal what happened between the two dads. Yu Shu also talks to Jin Zhan's father, telling him she can't be friends with Jin Zhan, but Jin Zhan's father refuses to go along with that.
The fathers then recount an incident from over 10 years ago. Yu Shu's father, who was a police officer at the time, had an accident and underwent surgery. During the hospital stay, there was a dispute, and when Yu Shu's father tried to intervene, Jin Zhan's father held him back. This incident caused a rift between the two longtime friends. Yu Shu's father was also unable to continue as a police officer due to his injuries.
Jin Zhan and Yu Shu are surprised to learn this long history between their fathers. They share the secret with their friends, and Du Sha comments that Jin Zhan seems more like Yu Shu's father's child, while Yu Shu seems more like Jin Zhan's studious father's son.
During a class break, Jin Zhan falls asleep and wakes up with barrettes in his hair, presumably put there by Yu Shu. Later, Yu Shu tells Jin Zhan she has a plan to get their fathers to reconcile. The two secretly arrange for the fathers to meet again, hoping they can put the past behind them.
The fathers feel uncomfortable sitting together, but Jin Zhan's father suggests Yu Shu stay at their house, which Yu Shu's father is hesitant about. The kids quickly come out and convince Yu Shu's father to agree. Yu Shu has been staying with Jin Zhan to tutor him, and one morning Jin Zhan is very sleepy from studying late. Yu Shu threatens him with an old photo, and in the ensuing scuffle, the photo falls to the ground, where Chen Xiao Hong sees Jin Zhan's name written on the back, further embarrassing Jin Zhan.
Jin Zhan still thinks that Yu Shu is a good student in front of the teacher, but changes once away from the teacher. Yu Shu says she sometimes puts on an act, but has done many embarrassing things since sitting with Jin Zhan, though she is happy to have met him.
He Shang and Xiao Mei go to find Jin Zhan, and Jin Zhan suspects the two have something going on. He Shang says their top priority now is studying, and they can deal with other matters after the college entrance exam. Xiao Mei says she plans to talk things through with Yu Shu today, and Du Sha encourages her.
Xiao Mei approaches Yu Shu alone and confesses her feelings, but Yu Shu says they are just good friends. Xiao Mei is dejected and leaves Jin Zhan's house, with He Shang quickly going after her.
He Shang expresses his love to Xiao Mei, hoping she won't be alone. Jin Zhan is happy to see his older brother and Hong Jie's marriage certificate, as they plan a trip for their wedding. Jin Zhan asks Yu Shu to borrow money, claiming it's for extra practice materials, but really wants to buy a video game console. However, Yu Shu, who controls the finances, refuses to allow Jin Zhan to do anything unrelated to studying.
Later that night, while Yu Shu is already asleep, Jin Zhan is loudly playing games. Yu Shu can't sleep and goes to find Jin Zhan, who claims he is balancing work and rest. The next morning, Yu Shu tells Jin Zhan to be quieter at night. Now living together, Yu Shu is very unaccustomed to Jin Zhan's daily habits, and Jin Zhan complains, accidentally spilling jam on Yu Shu's clothes.
