Episode 12 recap: Teachers Overcome Challenges to Provide Home Education
In Episode 12, An Yan feels comforted as she watches her former students achieve success. However, Guo Pinxian feels a sense of inadequacy for not being accepted into graduate school like his peers, instead becoming a civil servant in Wujiang County. He often reflects on his gratitude toward An Yan, recalling that eleven years ago, if it hadn't been for her and Principal Zhong visiting his home personally, he might still be farming.
At that time, Guo had injured his leg. To help him prepare for school and exams, An Yan devised a plan. Principal Zhong discussed Guo’s excellent academic performance and family circumstances with the school, believing that helping him would also benefit the school. Although the teachers were hesitant, An Yan took the lead in volunteering, encouraging others to join her.
Days passed, and Guo continued his studies at home. He never forgot the support he received from his teachers. An Yan emphasized that he was now working hard to give back to society, fulfilling the lessons she taught him. Meanwhile, Qiu Yun, despite having graduated from graduate school, hoped to return to her alma mater to teach and help more students escape the mountains. Yang Hong was studying medicine and preparing to pursue a doctorate to help more people.
An Yan shared the meeting’s agenda with the school, which focused on providing home education for children with disabilities. The teachers felt uncertain, as they had no experience teaching disabled children and lacked the resources to take on additional responsibilities. By the end of the meeting, only An Yan, Cong Jun Sheng, and Principal Zhong signed up to participate.
To motivate the teachers, An Yan offered that those willing to provide home education could participate in a professional rating. The next day, the teachers began their home visits. One boy was resistant to learning, convinced he would never go to college and feeling hopeless. After sharing inspiring examples, the teachers finally managed to encourage him to engage in his studies.
Cong Jun Sheng and An Yan made their way to Gouxi Village, where Lu Guangbin was waiting for them at the entrance. Upon seeing them, Lu Guangbin couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy toward Cong Jun Sheng.
During their journey, Lu Guangbin shared information about Zhang Hongyang, who had suffered brain damage from a high fever in childhood and could only manage basic functions. Suddenly, Zhang Hongyang startled An Yan by hiding in the bushes. Seeing his condition stirred her compassion, prompting her to start teaching him from the basics. Although he often ran around or caused trouble during lessons, he eventually began applying what he learned, successfully counting the chickens at home.
An Yan and Cong Jun Sheng were both excited, and in a moment of spontaneity, their hands accidentally touched, catching Lu Guangbin's attention.
An Yan took the opportunity to visit Pan Shiyu's home to help her with her studies, hoping she could spend more time with her mother. When Cong Jun Sheng arrived at the restaurant, Teacher Li called out to him. He originally intended to invite him to eat together, but ended up asking what he was up to instead.
While Cong Jun Sheng went to help An Yan get a meal, the other teachers, aiming to bring her and Cong Jun Sheng closer, deliberately placed his food next to Teacher Li. When Cong Jun Sheng returned and found his meal had been moved to the adjacent table, he sat down and started eating without noticing Teacher Li's subtle concern for him.
Suddenly, Cong Jun Sheng remembered that he had forgotten the materials Principal Zhou had asked him to prepare. He left with his food in hand, and the other teachers scolded Li Qin for not being direct enough, wasting a good opportunity. Upon An Yan's return from her teaching assignment, Cong Jun Sheng had warmed up some dishes for her. Seeing his thoughtfulness, An Yan praised him as a warm-hearted guy and encouraged him to find a girlfriend. Noticing that he had feelings for someone who remained indifferent, she analyzed that there were only two possibilities: either the person didn’t like him and couldn’t see his care, or he wasn’t doing enough, and needed to try harder.
At that moment, An Yan was unaware that she was the one Cong Jun Sheng had feelings for. During heavy rain, Cong Jun Sheng arrived at Hongyang's home as promised to teach him. Although he was much calmer than last time, Zhang Hongyang still struggled to focus on his studies. Cong Jun Sheng felt helpless; when Zhang Hongyang saw his teacher getting angry, he apologized and made a gesture of holding his head, which made Cong Jun Sheng feel pity for him. He tried various methods to help Hongyang successfully say his own name. Just as he was about to break down, Zhang Hongyang managed to say "Hongyang" while looking at the sunset.
Zhang Nan suddenly changed his mind and wanted to return to his alma mater to work. He explained to An Yan that his mother had cancer, and the expenses he earned were from his participation in poverty alleviation efforts. The new director promised him that if he succeeded, he would consider giving him a chance to return to the city and achieve his dreams.
An Yan encouraged him, stating that many people needed his help. Tian Rulin delivered freshly slaughtered pork to An Yan, sharing that he had secured a job driving in his hometown. Now he could work while accompanying his child and hoped that An Yan would teach his child in middle school. The next day, Cong Jun Sheng returned to teach Zhang Hongyang how to read, but he kept using his nickname. Cong Jun Sheng had to give up and temporarily decided to teach him numbers. To his surprise, Zhang Hongyang ran off to a chicken coop to count the chickens instead.
