Episode 23 recap: An Yan's Visit - Firm Proposal for Student Boarding

In Episode 23, Xiao Yang informs Lu Guang Bin about the situation: there are limited job positions available for relocation, but the higher-ups are looking for solutions. At this moment, an elderly grandfather who has just moved to the city struggles to identify similar buildings and often gets lost. An Yan encounters this issue and suggests that the various communities come together to hold events to raise awareness.

Cong Jun Sheng takes Yang Yang to an English tutoring class, where the teacher seizes the opportunity to promote other courses. Initially, Cong Jun Sheng is against Yang Yang attending tutoring classes, but after seeing the offerings from the training center, he realizes some ideas and courses could be beneficial for the school. The training center learns that Cong Jun Sheng is a middle school physics teacher and offers him a high salary to join, but he has no intention of switching jobs.

Cong Jun Sheng visits the city specifically to discuss the issue of teacher redistribution with An Yan. He feels that since he is the last one to arrive at Heping Middle School, he should be the one to be transferred. He plans to apply for a move back to the city, but before he can finish, An Yan receives a call from the police station about three students stealing from a supermarket. An Yan and Fang Xiang head to the police station, where they find the same three students who had urinated in the school hallway a few days earlier.

An Yan apologizes to the store owner and offers to compensate for the loss, promising to properly educate the children. He takes the kids home and learns from their living conditions that they are left-behind children, with their parents working elsewhere and only their grandmother to care for them. The grandson leads An Yan to the square to find their grandmother, and during their conversation, it becomes clear that the grandmother neglects the children, preoccupied with her own entertainment.

The children express their gratitude to An Yan for not telling their grandmother about the theft, and they explain their reasons for stealing. The next day, An Yan suggests to the teachers that they collaborate with the community to identify how many children are living alone. Fang Xiang initially plans to organize a city life activity, which could coincide with this initiative.

Fu Pei Yu transfers to Tongjiang No. 1 High School, where she becomes the homeroom teacher for Class One of the first year. Pan Shiyu eagerly answers a question, emphasizing that mastering Chinese language skills requires independent learning, a sentiment Fu Pei Yu also wishes to convey. This impresses her greatly. Principal Zhou hands Cong Jun Sheng a list of transfers, revealing that Li Qin and Qin Huazi, both excellent teachers, are included due to the school's comprehensive considerations.

Cong Jun Sheng learns that he is the only one left for the remaining position. He feels conflicted about the possibility of his family being affected by Li Qin's transfer from Heping.

On the way back to the dormitory, An Yan encounters Qin Huazi, who has specifically prepared loquats to share with everyone. Watching them treat the school like home makes her feel a bit guilty. That evening, Li Qin makes a special delivery of pomelos to Cong Jun Sheng. He had intended to discuss the teacher redistribution, but instead, he changes his mind and invites her out for a meal when he has the chance.

Zhang Xiaowei stays out all night and returns home in the morning, warning his daughter not to tell her mother about his card games. He also tells Wen Jing that he cannot afford the tutoring classes she mentioned. The school's uniform design has been completed, and it’s just waiting for the students to purchase them. Wen Jing asks if students from families in need can get them for free, sparking a flurry of discussions among her classmates, leaving Wen Jing feeling embarrassed.

Miao Nasha learns about this and immediately offers money to the teacher, believing that these small expenses are manageable. She feels the school has already provided special care, and they take pride in their situation. Teacher Wu Hong Lin begins teaching students calligraphy, with his lessons streamed live to all the classes. This approach does not dampen the students' enthusiasm; the video runs smoothly. Fang Xiang's method allows one teacher to instruct the entire school, significantly saving resources.

An Yan and Fang Xiang visit students’ homes over the weekend and accidentally discover that some students are spending money on a predatory game. This game has a severe negative impact on their mental health. They conclude that the children have deceived their teachers about their financial situations, as their monthly allowances still leave them with surplus money. An Yan has three students read the government’s subsistence policy at the door, reprimanding them for not only squandering their parents' hard-earned money but also disregarding the support they receive from the country. Instead of making an effort, they have become self-destructive.

As a result, An Yan realizes that most left-behind children waste a lot of time during evenings and weekends. To verify this, they visit a popular street with the police and find many students gaming in internet cafes. They even spot students drinking at food stalls, and An Yan recognizes one of the drinking students as from their school. Upon inquiry, she learns that their parents are all working away from home.

The next day, An Yan proposes that the school arrange for boarding and evening study sessions. Principal Wang disagrees, citing a lack of teachers to supervise the students and insufficient funding. However, Fang Xiang fully supports An Yan's decision.
