Episode 24 recap: Fourteenth Middle School Granted Evening Study Qualification
In Episode 24, An Yan addresses the issue of student accommodations by directly informing the two principals. The third and fourth floors of the building are converted into separate dormitories for boys and girls, and students are responsible for maintaining cleanliness. An Yan even covers the costs to install a water heater in the hallway herself. Principal Wen feels that Fang Xiang and An Yan are still too young and believes that their school doesn’t meet the necessary boarding conditions, as the situation is quite complicated.
An Yan consults Director Ma about the possibility of offering evening study sessions at the school. Director Ma, aware that the school lacks boarding facilities, strongly opposes the idea. However, he eventually submits the proposal under pressure from An Yan. Shortly after, An Yan receives a phone call from her daughter's homeroom teacher asking her to come to school. The teacher hands her a composition written by her daughter, and as An Yan reads it, she is moved to tears. She realizes her daughter is in a situation similar to that of left-behind children—her busy work schedule and the absence of her father mean that her daughter lacks support in many subjects.
To assist An Yan, Director Ma shares with Director Yu some insider information about an inspection of the Fourteenth Middle School. A relative had informed him that although they have relocated to the city, the children’s nightlife is excessively active. Director Yu immediately instructs Director Ma to discuss these issues with An Yan before higher authorities come to address them.
An Yan recognizes that she spends little time with her daughter and decides to pick her up from school. At that moment, Cong Jun Sheng arrives at the school to discuss the redistribution of teaching staff and waits for her in the gym. Fang Xiang visits several families and finds that parents are in favor of their children boarding and are willing to pay the accommodation fees.
An Yan urges the two principals to start preparing the dormitory beds. Seeing their lack of enthusiasm, she becomes anxious, knowing that the children can't wait. Later, An Yan takes her daughter and Cong Jun Sheng to the experimental vegetable garden, where they plant radishes together, inspiring her daughter’s next composition topic.
An Yan reflects on her feelings about being called to school by the teacher and realizes her lack of care for her child. She decides to accompany her daughter to evening study sessions, allowing her to work while still being present for her child. Cong Jun Sheng suggests they also help Yang Yang and Nuan Nuan together in the evenings, but An Yan politely declines. When Cong Jun Sheng goes to a training institution to pick up Yang Yang, the director recognizes him and proposes that he teach science classes there with a flexible schedule, emphasizing that they are interested in his reputation and teaching methods. Cong Jun Sheng is aware of this institution's advancements in certain areas and is open to considering the opportunity.
An Yan led the children as they turned off the lights in the school one by one. Nuan Nuan asked her why they didn’t just pull the main switch. She recalled that she had previously asked her teacher the same question. It turned out that some students stayed behind in the classroom to study, and turning off the power for everyone would disrupt them.
That night, the village elder returned to the village carrying a bag, only to be spotted by Lu Guang Bin. The elder explained that he couldn’t get used to living in the city and wanted to return to his dilapidated house in the village. Concerned for his safety, Lu Guang Bin firmly refused. The elder lamented that he couldn’t find a restroom outside in the city and had to scan codes just to buy things, which he found very uncomfortable and quite boring.
To help the elder feel more at ease living in the city, Lu Guang Bin promised to find him something to do. The next day, the elder was offered a rooftop garden by the leadership, which he could manage as it was suitable for farming. Fang Xiang, along with community members, took the villagers through the streets to help them practice shopping and being cautious when crossing roads. By the end of the day, they realized that life in the city was quite convenient.
The results of the first calligraphy competition at the Fourteenth Middle School were announced, and the students’ calligraphy plaques were hung at the school gate, making their parents proud. Due to the elder frequently confusing building numbers, Fang Xiang had the art teacher paint the twelve zodiac animals to help them remember, so they wouldn’t get lost again.
After careful consideration, Cong Jun Sheng added his name to the staff redistribution list but was met with refusal from Principal Zhou. Cong Jun Sheng felt that being single made it easy for him to adapt anywhere, but for other teachers with families, relocating would be quite inconvenient. Fang Xiang managed to find several second-hand computers and invited the students to come and assemble them, deepening their learning experience.
An Yan took Director Ma on a tour of the student dormitories, which were clean and tidy. Director Ma suggested that they trial the arrangements for a while. Afterwards, An Yan presented her proposal regarding the lack of supervision for students after school to Director Yu, suggesting the implementation of evening study sessions with police patrols ensuring safety on the way home. Director Yu promptly approved the evening study sessions at the Fourteenth Middle School.
