Episode 38 recap: Lu Chui Chui and Jiang Langxing Escape the City

Oh boy, this situation is quite convoluted! Luo Zhi left first, giving Lu Chui Chui three days to think about her next steps. Feeling overwhelmed, Lu Chui Chui broke down in tears, clinging to Jiang Langxing. Meanwhile, Yan Xing hadn’t left her room for days, refusing to eat, which had her mother worried sick about her well-being.

Just then, Pan Chi arrived, and Yan Xing let him in. Before long, Mrs. Yang showed up, clearly displeased. She believed that since Yan Xing had returned to the Yan residence, she should follow the rules and not secretly meet with a man. Yan Xing’s mother immediately defended her, arguing that Yan Xing was a high-ranking official in the Ministry of Justice and that there was nothing scandalous about meeting someone.

As their argument escalated, they even started to physically fight. Yan Xing's father rushed in, equally frustrated, but couldn’t calm either side down. At this point, Yan Xing remained surprisingly composed and decided to go out. She and Pan Chi slipped into an alley where someone was waiting to give Yan Xing a cloak, allowing them to escape through a secret passage without being noticed.

At the pawn shop, Lu Chui Chui had been waiting, initially worried that Yan Xing wouldn’t make it. When Yan Xing saw the embroidery on the cloak that read “Gift from Zhan Xin,” she realized it was a token from Kwang Zhan's sister, likely given due to Yan Xing’s previous help.

Years ago, when Lu Chui Chui and Yan Xing first met, Yan Xing had noticed suspicious figures around. She had taken Lu Chui Chui’s hand, declaring they would sever ties with Shen Du, while secretly handing her a note to meet Pan Chi at the pawn shop in three days. And now, Pan Chi had arrived right on time.

Lu Chui Chui and Jiang Langxing decided to lay low for a while. Lu Chui Chui donned the cloak, pretending to be Yan Xing as they left to meet Jiang Langxing outside the city. On the way, Lu Chui Chui asked Jiang Langxing if it was worth giving up everything for her, to which he replied passionately that being with her made everything worthwhile.

Luo Zhi soon realized they were missing and became furious, sending people to search for them. Meanwhile, Yan Xing and Pan Chi were reminiscing at the place where they first met. Pan Chi mustered the courage to confess his feelings, asking if Yan Xing would run away with him. They even released a sky lantern, symbolizing their good wishes.

Suddenly, Luo Zhi barged in, threatening them that if they didn’t return, he would kill them. Shen Du also showed up, but only shot down the lantern without taking further action. In the end, Yan Xing and Pan Chi decided to leave the city, claiming they had discussed a short trip with their families, who thought it would be good for them to clear their heads.

On another front, Luo Zhi learned that the Empress Dowager was gravely ill and entered the palace to demand she write a decree of abdication. However, the Empress Dowager wasn’t easily intimidated; she refused to comply and revealed Luo Zhi’s true identity as the son of the late Consort Shu, who sacrificed herself to protect him. It turned out that the charred boy from the fire wasn’t Luo Zhi at all, but rather his nurse’s son, whom she had swapped.

Luo Zhi made a bold statement that the day of the Grand Court Assembly would mark his ascension to the throne. Meanwhile, Yan Xing and Pan Chi sought out Yan Xing's master, who informed them that Consort Shu was actually the Princess of Biluo from Nanlang.

As the Grand Court Assembly approached, the Empress Dowager made a surprise appearance, looking vigorous and declaring she had recovered, thus no longer requiring Luo Zhi to act as regent.

What a whirlwind of events!
