Episode 40 recap: Yan Xing and Shen Du's Marriage
As the plot unfolds, Prince Xian (Li Chang-geng) finds himself in a dilemma amid the complex palace intrigues. Chancellor Zhang (Zhang Juzheng) advises him to cease the investigation, warning that it could involve fundamental interests of the state. In response, Empress Dowager Feng directly exposes the key figure in the incident—her nephew, Zhou Miao. This revelation surprises even Chancellor Zhang.
Determined to get to the bottom of the matter, the Empress Dowager decides to impose harsher penalties on those involved from the Zhou family. When asked how to deal with Chancellor Zhang, Prince Xian suggests following the law but also expresses a wish to pardon Zhang's family, considering his past contributions. The Empress Dowager agrees, highlighting Prince Xian's humanity and compassion.
Meanwhile, Shen Bingzhu (Shen Du's father) is exonerated, bringing great comfort to Shen Du. Yan Xing (the female lead) stands before an ancestral tablet at home, filled with hope for the future. The interaction between the Empress Dowager and the young emperor showcases a tender side of royalty.
Princess Yong'an approaches the Empress Dowager to clarify her stance. She states her willingness to accept any punishment, but the Empress Dowager believes she didn’t truly partake in the rebellion—having only offered support out of goodwill—so no punishment is imposed. The Empress Dowager teaches the young emperor that ruling the country is not just about dispensing money; it’s crucial to win the hearts of the people.
The young emperor shows maturity beyond his years, which pleases the Empress Dowager. Princess Yong'an vows to wholeheartedly assist the young emperor, demonstrating her loyalty and sense of responsibility.
The story progresses as Wu Zhu Shi receives a raise for his good performance, and Qi Ye Yun joins the Ministry of Justice as a new constable, with his relationship with Shen Du becoming well-known.
In an attempt to rekindle his romance with Yan Xing, Shen Du sends gifts repeatedly, all of which she returns. Undeterred, Shen Du persists, becoming a topic of conversation in the streets, where people encourage him to continue pursuing Yan Xing. Upon learning of Shen Du's efforts, the Empress Dowager sees it as a lesson to all men: never offend your wife.
She also mentions that she has long sought an opportunity to provide examinations for students from humble backgrounds, and now is the time for these aspiring individuals to showcase their talents. She uses this example to persuade Yan Xing to give Shen Du a chance to amend his mistakes. Meanwhile, Pan Chi secretly participates in the examinations but is discovered by Jiang Langxing.
After Lu Chui Chui and Jiang Langxing return, Lu's father expresses satisfaction with Jiang's performance. Yan Xing's mother is busy preparing for Yan Xing's wedding, believing that her previous marriage was not formal due to certain reasons, and a new ceremony is necessary to rectify this.
Ultimately, during a challenging wedding game, Shen Du chooses to wait outside the door for Yan Xing. When she learns that Shen Du hasn't left as rumored, she rushes out of the house. In front of their friends and family, they reconcile and step into a new life together.
