Episode 31 recap: Reluctantly Moving
In episode 31, after a few drinks, Na Wei let Shen Lin drive them home. He was dissatisfied with the advice given by his two cousins, but Shen Lin believed that moving to Yanjiao might be their best option right now. Once they arrived home, Shen Lin started looking up rent prices in Yanjiao and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was just over 2,100 yuan, which seemed reasonable to her.
She also checked with a real estate agent, who informed her that their current apartment could rent for 12,000 yuan on the market! Meanwhile, Na Wei, trying to emulate Li Xiao Yue from the past, spun around with a piece of paper that read "making money every day," and happily began scrolling through his social media. However, he was shocked to see the news that Lao Gao, also known as Gao Degui, had passed away.
The obituary was posted by Lao Gao's wife, Fan Wen, stating that he had suffered a heart attack the previous night at just 41 years old, which was truly tragic. The memorial service would be held at the funeral home in Tongzhou, and Na Wei decided to attend out of respect for their past friendship.
At the memorial, Lao Gao's sister-in-law told Na Wei that despite his passing, the family would definitely settle the debts he owed. Once they received the outstanding payments, they would immediately repay Na Wei. However, Na Wei, feeling mournful, couldn’t bring himself to discuss money at that moment. When Shen Lin returned, she wanted to talk about renting out their apartment, and to her surprise, Na Wei readily agreed without hesitation. But then he added that with Lao Gao gone, the money would likely take some time to arrive. This left Na Wei feeling uneasy, and he decided to close the company. Xiaoyue tried to encourage him, saying there would be other opportunities, but Na Wei remained silent.
On moving day, all the office supplies were cleared out, and Na Wei and Na Juan lay on the floor, reflecting on how difficult their journey had been. Meanwhile, Shen Lin went to Yanjiao to check out apartments, with her cousin helping her find a few options. The first one looked good, but the deposit was a bit high, requiring a three-month advance. After some thought, Shen Lin felt it was still too expensive and decided to look at a second option. Though the second apartment had some minor flaws, Shen Lin cleverly used these to negotiate the rent down to 2,300 yuan. The landlord was accommodating and even waived a few days of rent to let Shen Lin settle in without having to pay utilities during that time.
However, Shen Lin had her own worries about her daughter, Yueyue, starting school. Moving to Yanjiao meant a longer commute, which would cut into Yueyue’s sleep. Shen Lin discussed transferring Yueyue to a new school with her mother-in-law. Na Wei, feeling down, was willing to follow Shen Lin's lead, so she went to talk to Yueyue. Initially, Yueyue was silent, listening intently, but eventually nodded in agreement. Seeing her daughter’s reaction, Shen Lin felt a mix of emotions as she quietly closed the door behind her.
Once alone, Yueyue turned around and threw her pencil, unable to hold back her tears; after all, she was still just a child and couldn’t easily hide her feelings.
On the rental front, the agent brought prospective tenants to view the apartment, and Shen Lin firmly insisted on the 12,000 yuan rent—no less. The tenants were impressed by the decor and agreed to rent it without hesitation.
Soon after, Shen Lin’s family began packing up for the move. At this time, Shen Lei returned home, and the family shared a simple meal together, marking a brief reunion. When Shen Lei got back to his rented apartment, which had been vacant for a while and was covered in dust, he felt a new sense of calm as he started to clean up. He even messaged Xie Mei Lan to arrange a meeting.
With the help of Xiaoyue, Na Juan, and Shen Lei, Shen Lin's family successfully moved to Yanjiao. In their new home, Shen Lin painted a mural in Yueyue’s room to cheer her up. She also asked Xiaoyue to spend some time with Yueyue, hoping the child would quickly adjust to her new environment.
