Episode 9 recap: Mei Lan Receives a Heartfelt Gesture
In Episode 9, Shen Lin chats with Xie Mei Lan and learns that she had an abortion because Shen Lei lacks ambition. While others in their workplace are actively seeking recognition from their superiors, Shen Lei is indifferent to maintaining relationships. Despite having a stable job, his future seems stagnant, and he shows no desire to improve himself.
Shen Lin tries to explain that Shen Lei has a straightforward personality and doesn’t engage in flattery, which makes him seem purely optimistic. However, Xie Mei Lan doesn’t want to delve into that topic. She points out that when it comes to travel and life experiences, Shen Lei is completely unromantic and avoids taking risks, preferring to make long-term plans that result in a simple and dull life.
As Shen Lin attempts to persuade her further, Xie Mei Lan retorts that with her BMW and diamond ring, it’s easy for her to say such things, implying that Shen Lin doesn’t understand her struggles. Shen Lin is momentarily at a loss for words, and Xie Mei Lan grabs her bag and leaves. Later, Shen Lin scolds Shen Lei, expressing frustration that he remains unaware of the significant issues between them.
Shen Lei agrees to address these problems, but he feels that Xie Mei Lan has changed. When she returns home from work, she directly tells him not to let Shen Lin interfere in their relationship. The next morning, Xie Mei Lan skips breakfast, and although Shen Lei suggests they have a serious talk that evening, she dismisses him, saying they can discuss it later.
On Monday morning, Shen Lin wakes up to find her mother-in-law busy in the kitchen. She helps her son get ready for school, and after breakfast, her father-in-law drives her to the subway station, reminding her to reach out if she has questions about any software she doesn’t understand.
At work, Hu Hai Li gives Shen Lin a brief tour of the company, showing her the meeting rooms and kitchen. Mr. Jia, the boss, glances at Shen Lin and tells Hu Hai Li to inform him whenever they hire new staff.
Qin Feng starts micromanaging various departments, which frustrates everyone, though no one openly complains. During lunch, Shen Lin and her colleague Xiao Bei discuss the fact that Mr. Jia is the boss's brother-in-law, revealing that there are many connections in the company.
After returning from lunch, Shen Lin noticed that Hu Hai Li had re-applied her makeup and put on earrings. She immediately realized her own appearance made Hu Hai Li feel threatened, so she spontaneously gave Hu Hai Li some fruit slices and discreetly removed her earrings and necklace.
The board meeting for Anxin Household Services did not approve the proposal, and Lu Jie had done his best. Xie Mei Lan had been working on this project for a long time and had put in a lot of effort, so Lu Jie invited her to dinner that evening to discuss work arrangements, including the upcoming Yunshang Sangyu project.
During dinner, Lu Jie revealed to Xie Mei Lan that he was planning to dismiss Old Yuan and wanted her to become the director of the investment department. Xie Mei Lan was taken aback. Lu Jie had noticed her since she joined the company, and he had always had special feelings for her.
Xie Mei Lan told him that as long as her current situation didn't change, she wouldn't do anything out of line, as that was her principle and bottom line. Na Juan wanted to meet with a designer about home renovations, and Li Xiao Yue was going too, so she informed her father-in-law. When Qin Feng heard the clock-in signal, he immediately questioned him.
The father-in-law lied, saying he had sent Li Xiao Yue out for fieldwork. He lied without batting an eye, and Qin Feng believed him. When Shen Lin got home from work, her mother-in-law had already prepared dinner, but her father-in-law was still at the office working overtime. Na Wei contacted Na Juan to remind Xiao Yue that she must finish the new proposal by tomorrow, as Qin Feng was pushing for it.
Li Xiao Yue ignored the reminder, stubbornly insisting on playing a Werewolf game instead. Na Juan discovered that the game would take five hours to play, and when they were about to finish the second hour, she quickly contacted all the clues and deduced who the murderer was, allowing everyone to wrap up the game three hours early.
