Episode 1 recap: Misfortune

In the first episode, a young man named Shen Xing is about to turn twenty-two and knows he needs to find a job. He travels abroad to seek help from his uncle, who is a construction manager in a place called Bo Mo. His uncle wants him to focus on getting a degree, but Shen Xing realizes he isn't cut out for school. To him, all jobs are essentially the same, regardless of status.

Now that he’s arrived, his uncle decides to let him start at the bottom, working in transport, since construction supervision is closely related to civil engineering. Shen Xing meets a coworker named Guo Li Min, and that night, they sneak out to enjoy the local nightlife, which has been dubbed "Little Las Vegas." When they return, his uncle gives him a stern lecture.

The area isn’t as safe as back home; the local gangs hold more power than the law, and many people go missing each year without a trace. However, Shen Xing is young and inexperienced, so he brushes off his uncle's warnings. Later, he tags along with an experienced worker named Uncle Ma to pick up some materials, thinking he’s got the hang of things.

Then, Shen Xing’s uncle takes him to Da Qu Lin to discuss a construction project with a man named Ang Tun, who is eager to build on a plot of land within a tight one-month deadline. His uncle, however, feels that the timeline is too short and declines the job.

As the New Year approaches, the client still hasn't made a payment, and his uncle can't reach anyone from the company, so he orders the workers to stop working. Shen Xing wants to help his uncle but feels helpless and is advised not to take risks. Before leaving, his uncle warns him not to trust anyone but himself. After his uncle disappears, the workers grow anxious, suspecting that the manager has run off with their funds.

Worried about his uncle, Shen Xing tries to leave to search for him but is held back by his coworkers. Desperate, he decides to take the construction equipment for collateral. In the middle of the night, he breaks a lock, takes the keys and equipment certification, and goes to borrow 1.2 million yuan from Ti Pan, hoping to pay the workers and let them enjoy the New Year.

Ti Pan doesn’t have the money, and even if he did, the equipment wouldn’t be useful without skilled workers. However, Ti Pan suggests that Shen Xing ask Ba Zi Ge for a loan, which would come with interest. Shen Xing eventually borrows 1.2 million yuan, agreeing to pay back 1.32 million in a month.

With the workers' wages sorted, Shen Xing sets out to find his uncle. He learns from Ang Tun that the group his uncle was involved with is in conflict with the local militia over territory, making it dangerous for anyone to go collect debts. Surprisingly, Ang Tun offers to take Shen Xing into the locked-down area, claiming he has connections.

Unaware of Ang Tun's true intentions, Shen Xing follows him into a dangerous situation. He soon realizes he’s been set up, forced to play dead during a robbery, inadvertently helping Ang Tun commit the crime. Ang Tun then frames Shen Xing as a robber, intending to eliminate him as a witness.

Shen Xing narrowly escapes as the vehicle plunges, but his passport is found by searching police, making him a suspect. Not only are the police after him, but Cai Shu and Ba Zi Ge are looking for him too. Thanks to Guo Li Min's loyalty, Shen Xing manages to hide.

He decides to confront Cai Shu, but before he can point fingers at Ang Tun, Cai Shu stabs him and dumps him into the water, leaving his fate uncertain.
