Episode 37 recap: Misunderstandings Surrounding Du Man Tang

In Episode 37, Du Man Yi is troubled by doubts, feeling that Xiao Wang's "house for retirement" scheme is unreliable. He secretly places his phone on the windowsill and records everything Xiao Wang says. In a hurry, he finds Lao Ai and seriously advises him not to believe in such plans. However, just after he speaks, Lao Ai returns home and is confronted by his wife about mortgaging their house. Lao Ai immediately gets anxious, insisting that it is a family heirloom and he absolutely refuses.

Lao Ai’s wife is equally adamant. She slams the table and stands up, arguing that as an elderly couple without children, they need to plan for their retirement. Lao Ai, full of confidence, insists that his medicinal liquor will take care of their needs. This infuriates his wife further, prompting her to question why he never includes them in neighborhood discussions, implying that it’s because he’s ineffective. Lao Ai stubbornly claims that he is capable and that the neighbors are just ordinary people. Unwilling to back down, his wife decides to pursue the "house for retirement" plan herself, tearing up as she speaks.

Du Man Yi looks at a photo of his late father on the wall, feeling a mix of emotions, and starts to cry while holding the picture. Seeing this, Du Man Tang approaches him and advises him not to get too caught up in his thoughts. He reminds Du Man Yi that his father’s last words were to "study well" and that what matters most is to keep a steady heart and not to overreact.

Confused, Du Man Yi asks if being calm means being dead. Du Man Tang laughs and clarifies that it means "not being startled," urging him not to misinterpret it.

Meanwhile, Lao Ai, thrown out by his wife, is wandering in the alley when he bumps into Ma Bo. Excitedly, Ma Bo shares that he has done the math and participating in the "house for retirement" scheme could net him an extra 20,000 yuan a month, plus his pension, bringing his total to 30,000 yuan.

As Lao Ai listens, he is distracted by Zhang Ze Zhong, who is on the phone looking for a job. Lao Ai approaches him, encouraging him not to feel ashamed about job hunting, especially since he has support. He even mentions that Zhang Ze Zhong's ex-wife is an entrepreneur, prompting Zhang Ze Zhong to quickly clarify that they have both moved on with their lives.

Not ready to give up, Lao Ai heads to the drug administration office to get a certification for his medicinal liquor, bringing along San Ye to perform a promotional skit outside. However, the security guard tells them to go to the business bureau first. Ignoring the advice, Lao Ai starts his "small theater" at the entrance. It isn’t long before the police arrive, and Lao Ai is taken into the station. Director Shi, upon seeing him, expresses exasperation, questioning why he is always so restless, and informs him that this is considered creating a disturbance.

Meanwhile, Xiao Wang takes a group of elderly residents from the alley on a trip related to the "house for retirement" plan, and Du Man Yi secretly follows to gather evidence. Xiao Wang charms the elderly residents, making them very happy. Seizing the opportunity, Du Man Yi slips into the office to take photos and attempts to steal some documents but is caught in the act. Ma Bo is furious, slapping his own face in embarrassment, while Aunt Zhang chastises him for going from deception to theft, saying he's gone too far.

Feeling wronged, Du Man Yi crouches on the ground, looking dejected. Aunt Zhang pleads with the director on his behalf, arguing that Du Man Yi is young and doesn't understand, asking for another chance. Xiao Wang also speaks up in his defense. Frustrated, Du Man Yi, in a fit of anger, declares that he simply can't learn and starts slapping himself. Ma Bo continues to scold him for being shameless.

When Du Man Yi returns home, he expects to be reprimanded by Du Man Tang, but instead, Du Man Tang comforts him, saying that being a good person often leads to hardships, and the truth will take time to reveal itself.
