Episode 38 recap: Su Huirong Wants to Divorce Zhang Zezhong

In Episode 38, Zhang Zezhong is about to send a message to Su Huirong when her assistant, Eva, calls him to say she will pick him up shortly. When Zhang arrives, he finds himself in a room full of people—Su Huirong's private legal team. They are there to discuss the divorce on her behalf, and Zhang directly asks how much they are offering him.

They tell him that if he signs, he will receive 20 million yuan, but he must agree not to speak to anyone about his relationship with Su Huirong. They also mention that Zhang You Ting needs Su Huirong's authorization for something. Zhang tells them he can't sign such a document. After all these years of raising Zhang You Ting, he has been incredibly frugal.

He has saved and sacrificed to send Zhang You Ting abroad for school, and now that his son is grown and about to get married, he hopes to welcome grandchildren soon. After considering it, he realizes that he and his son can manage without the money. He tells them that if Su Huirong wants a divorce, she can just go to the civil affairs bureau with the necessary documents.

Su Huirong, who has been hiding nearby, hears everything and ponders this. Meanwhile, Zhang Zezhong struggles to find work. When he finally gets into a ride-share, the driver starts chatting with him. It turns out the driver is Mr. Sun, whom he met at the chicken farm. Mr. Sun asks why Zhang is having trouble finding a job.

Zhang explains that he isn't looking for work; he's actually there to hire people because today’s youth lack skills. Mr. Sun, seeing through his facade, tells Zhang that it's normal for someone his age to have difficulty finding work, but he shouldn't give up. He shares that he went through a tough time himself due to business troubles, but he and his wife started an online store together, which has been successful.

Mr. Sun encourages Zhang to remain hopeful and confident about the future. Meanwhile, Du Mantang and Du Manyi are having dinner when Du Manyi receives a phone call. He inquires about the investigation into a nursing home, asking if the director is legitimate. The caller confirms that the director is indeed real, and after hearing about the nursing home, Du Manyi is tempted to consider living there himself, as it sounds quite impressive.

Du Mantang tells him to stop overthinking things. Du Manyi responds that, from the perspective of a con artist, the young Wang and his crew are definitely scammers. Du Manyi then asks Du Mantang about the house. Du Mantang asks what he wants to do. Du Manyi suggests transferring everything to Du Mantang's name since he has debts, and he doesn’t want Du Mantang to be affected if the court makes a ruling one day.

Du Mantang insists that he shouldn't be doing this and reminds him that they are family. Du Mantang reveals that he has collected some money from the funeral contributions after the old man passed away, along with a little extra he gathered himself. He hands Du Manyi 300,000 yuan and tells him that if he wants to improve his situation, he should use this money to pay off his debts.

Du Mantang then shares this with Wang Xiaoqing, who agrees that it’s only right for the old man's money to help his son in emergencies. Du Mantang appreciates his wife's loyalty and proposes a travel plan. Wang Xiaoqing agrees, and the two decide to set off the next day.

The following day, Du Mantang takes Wang Xiaoqing to a scenic spot featured on a 100 yuan bill. Wang Xiaoqing complains that this hardly counts as a trip since it’s only a few kilometers from home. She suggests they go watch a movie. However, not long after they settle in the theater, Du Mantang falls asleep.

In the alley, a ride-share driver mentions needing help to sell his car and asks Zhang Zezhong for assistance. Zhang offers to help find someone to drive it.

Zhang then becomes a ride-share driver himself. When he returns to the alley, he sees Old Ai staring blankly at a piece of paper. Zhang asks him what's wrong. Old Ai replies that his life's work has been ruined by this paper, which states that his medicinal wine does not meet national standards.

Old Ai's wife brings Du Manyi over, hoping to introduce him to a job. Du Manyi assures her he will improve and that she doesn’t need to worry about him. Just then, they see Old Ai returning, looking dejected, having smashed the medicinal wine he had brewed. Aunty Zhang and Grandma Jin are trying to discuss the idea of using their homes for retirement with their families. Old Ai, troubled by the medicinal wine issue, also wants to get involved in the conversation about using homes for retirement.
