Episode 19 recap: Zhang Jiuri's Desperate Rescue of Wuxie
In Episode 19, Zhang Nian is most terrified of Zhang Qi Ling. In a moment of confusion, his mind is filled with thoughts of Zhang Qi Ling, making him feel like he’s seen a ghost. He fires his weapon wildly, but Zhang Qi Ling remains unfazed, as if nothing is happening. Zhang Nian, frightened like a rabbit, runs around aimlessly, yet that shadow clings to him as if glued.
Ultimately, Zhang Nian finds himself cornered where Zhang Hai Ke is held. In a moment of desperation, he grabs a bomb as a makeshift charm and warns Zhang Qi Ling that if he takes another step, everyone will be done for.
Zhang Nian has truly lost it. When he hears Wuxie mention that the Zhang family is waiting outside, he realizes he can't escape and decides to go all in by activating the toxic gas device.
Zhang Hai Ke is right next door, watching in horror as the gas spreads. He struggles desperately to free himself from his bindings. Outside, Wuxie is frantic; he grabs a chair and hurls it at the glass door, smashing it open. Without hesitation, he drags Zhang Hai Ke outside.
Wuxie is also badly injured, and the gas makes his legs weak, almost causing him to collapse. At that moment, Zhang Nian throws a bomb toward them. Wuxie runs for his life but is still caught by the blast’s heat. In his daze, he sees Zhang Jiuri nearby and feels a surge of panic, fearing the gas will harm everyone.
Without a second thought, Zhang Jiuri pulls Wuxie away to safety, but just as they catch their breath, the ground collapses beneath them. As he gasps for air, Zhang Jiuri mutters about why Wuxie insists on saving so many people when they could have escaped sooner. Zhang Nian, already dazed from the hex, had a chance to flee but wasted it searching for Zhang Hai Ke and Fatty.
Finally, they see Zhang Hai Ke is safe, but Zhang Jiuri is exhausted. Just as he speaks, a large rock crashes down, and to protect Wuxie, Zhang Jiuri takes the hit, sacrificing himself until his last breath.
When Wuxie wakes up, the clan leader is watching over him. Although he was rescued, Zhang Jiuri will never return. Zhang Nian has also escaped, leaving Wuxie feeling frustrated. A good person like Zhang Jiuri is gone, along with so many innocent lives from the Zhang family village.
At this moment, a foreigner named Feng jumps in, offering cooperation. He claims their advanced technology can help everyone enter the snow mountain, but the condition is to grant them research rights to the Night King. Wuxie and Zhang Hai Ke are initially reluctant, but Feng is persistent, and Fatty insists that they prioritize entering the snow mountain.
Before heading into the mountains, Wuxie and Zhang Hai Ke hold a cremation for Zhang Jiuri. The Zhang family could have lived long lives, but Zhang Hai Xing says that longevity is also a kind of torment, leaving them wondering why they are alive. Zhang Jiuri spent his life searching for reasons to live; he was skilled and prudent, never killing innocents without cause. This time, perhaps it serves as his release.
As they enter the snow mountain, Wuxie remembers Zhang Qi Ling, who once poisoned himself to save the entire village, suffering from an incurable disease. When Zhang Qi Ling was lucid, he likely sought to uncover his own origins, but whenever his illness flared up, he couldn’t remember anything.
Wuxie empathizes with his pain—trying to find clarity only to forget is a torment worse than death. He also hears that Zhang Qi Ling spent some time in Mo Mountain and encountered Feng’s expedition team, who wanted him to guide them into the snow mountain and even gave him salt for his horse.
Both Wuxie and Zhang Qi Ling walked different paths to reach the snow mountain, driven by their shared devotion and beliefs.
