Episode 20 recap: Zhang Qi Ling's Close Encounter with the Night King

In episode 20, the foreigner Feng is incredibly sincere toward Zhang Qi Ling. Not only does he prepare food for Zhang Qi Ling's horse and rabbit, but he also earnestly asks Zhang Qi Ling to be their guide. At first, the weather is pleasant, but halfway through their journey, a snowstorm suddenly hits—like a change in mood.

Feng is anxious, contemplating whether to turn back down the mountain, fearing the cold could be unbearable. However, Zhang Qi Ling firmly refuses, pointing out that going back is also a dead end; the snowstorm is waiting, and they would end up frozen like popsicles.

The wind intensifies, and the Denasi people move slowly, regretting their decision to follow Zhang Qi Ling. But regret aside, they press on. Just then, a miracle occurs—light suddenly shines from above, like a skylight opening up. The temperature rises rapidly, and the snowstorm vanishes. Everyone feels warm and grateful; this time, it’s Zhang Qi Ling who saves their lives.

Meanwhile, Wu Xie discovers some old stories about Zhang Qi Ling while digging through the rock layers. His curiosity piques, and he decides to return to the training ground, hoping to uncover more about Zhang Qi Ling. Upon arrival, he finds a scroll given by Teacher Yu Da, discovered during cleaning.

As Wu Xie opens the scroll, he learns that Zhang Qi Ling did indeed venture through the snow, uncovering many secrets of the Zhang family. It’s said that on the snow-capped mountains, he encountered someone named Dong Can, who appeared to be embedded in the rock wall, looking plump and wise. Zhang Qi Ling decides to visit Dong Can’s former location, hoping to trace some clues.

Reaching Dong Can’s territory, Zhang Qi Ling spots a painting on the wall depicting majestic peaks and serene lakes, resembling a paradise. He feels a strong urge to see this landscape for himself. He hires several guides for a hefty price, but these guides, motivated by money, chicken out halfway up the mountain, claiming the area is haunted by ghosts, snowstorms, and freezing temperatures.

These two guides clearly have their own agendas. Zhang Qi Ling notices one of them hiding a dagger at his waist and promptly dismisses him to avoid any trouble. Along the way, they encounter a few frozen Denasi people. Zhang Qi Ling checks their identification and realizes they are the same group he had saved earlier. He finds a diary among them filled with stories about the Night King, which sends chills down his spine.

The journey becomes increasingly perilous. Zhang Qi Ling, unwilling to put the guides at further risk, hands them a bag of gold to send them back. He continues alone. When he reaches the place depicted in the painting, he discovers a grand temple bustling with offerings, yet not a single person is in sight.

Zhang Qi Ling cautiously searches through the rooms and finds writing on the walls, detailing stories about the Night King. This piques his curiosity even further.
