In Episode 4, on a stormy night ten years ago, the Wu family mansion was shrouded in deep sorrow. The family patriarch, Wu Lao Ye, lay on his deathbed, barely clinging to life. Wu Xie's father gently asked if his father had any last wishes. With trembling hands, the old man pointed to an antique on the table, instructing his two grandsons to share it equally. He left behind a strict demand: after his death, he must be cremated immediately, and no one was allowed to be within thirty meters of the cremation site or to look into the furnace.
Young Wu Xie witnessed all of this, planting a deep seed of curiosity about his grandfather's secretive passing. Over the years, although the truth remained elusive like a fog, he occasionally found himself chasing that unresolved mystery in his dreams.
One morning, outside the temple where Wu Xie was staying, he stumbled upon a peculiar sight—an individual sitting quietly, gazing at a distant cliff, resembling a statue. Upon closer inspection, he discovered it was a lifelike stone statue known as Zhang Qi Ling, which locals claimed had stood for decades. Wu Xie pondered whether this statue concealed secrets similar to those he was chasing.
Later, when Wu Xie entered a local restaurant, he was taken aback by the sight of unfamiliar faces filling the place. The waiter revealed that these "backpackers" had suddenly appeared on the third day of Wu Xie's arrival, acting strangely and not like typical tourists. Feeling uneasy, Wu Xie immediately contacted his friend Fatty. Upon hearing the news, Fatty sensed something was off and warned him that he might be caught in someone else's trap, especially since the mysterious painting had shown up at the post office, adding to the oddity.
Wu Xie decided to stay cautious, pretending to read ancient scrolls while secretly observing. He attempted to approach a woman with a chocolate bar but was met with indifference. What heightened his wariness was the fact that his hidden belongings had been moved, indicating he was being watched. Wu Xie quickly informed Fatty of the situation and arranged to meet in the hotel restroom the next day.
Disguised, Fatty infiltrated the restroom, where they urgently discussed their plan. Fatty revealed that Wu Xie was being tracked by multiple parties, including foreigners, and that their home phone was being tapped. They decided to adopt counter-surveillance tactics: Wu Xie would continue to act oblivious while Fatty monitored from the shadows, looking for an escape route.
The next day, Wu Xie visited the old man's residence as planned, only to be met with a shocking sight—there was another "Wu Xie" inside. The two resembled each other so closely that it was nearly impossible to tell them apart. Tension escalated in the room, and armed intruders burst in, demanding to identify the real Wu Xie. Both claimed to be the genuine article, leading to chaos. Ultimately, a woman suggested that perhaps the impostor had already donned a human skin mask, making it impossible to distinguish between them.
This sudden twist made Wu Xie realize he was entangled in a complex web of conspiracy, and the identical face only added to the confusion. He understood that the only way to navigate this unknown confrontation was to remain calm and work closely with Fatty, seeking a glimmer of hope to uncover the true secret behind his grandfather's death and the mysteries surrounding his own identity.
