Episode 24 recap: Liu Mian Tang and Zi Yu Team Up for Revenge

In Episode 24, the Princess of Sui Yang, aiming to support her husband’s ambitions, decides to woo the capable Cui Xing Zhou. She sends Liu Mian Tang, who brings exquisite jewelry, to personally present it to him, showing her genuine interest. Coincidentally, Zi Yu's elder sister is also present, and the princess takes the opportunity to chat with Cui Xing Zhou, asking about his plans since breaking off his engagement and offering to help him find another suitable match.

Zi Yu discreetly signals to his sister, who then reveals that Cui Xing Zhou already has someone special in Qingzhou and even gifted her the most precious perfume. This revelation shifts the atmosphere noticeably. Liu Mian Tang, aware of the perfume's significance, feels flustered when the princess probes further, accidentally dropping her jade belt in her nervousness. The princess notices and tells her to return later with a fresh one.

Later, Zi Yu invites Liu Mian Tang to the palace. Upon arriving at the Crown Prince’s residence, she spots a blossoming crabapple tree in the courtyard, its fragrance reminiscent of a tree she saw in Yangshan, filling her with warmth as the surroundings feel familiar.

Zi Yu approaches and finds Liu Mian Tang warming her hands by the heater. He asks her how she has been lately, and she downplays her situation, which he immediately understands, feeling a twinge of jealousy as he recalls their close moments with Cui Xing Zhou.

Zi Yu bluntly addresses Liu Mian Tang's disguise as a way to seek revenge against Sui Wang. She does not deny it, and he warns her that Sui Wang is not easy to deal with and suggests they collaborate to bring him down since Sui Wang has been quite arrogant due to his military achievements.

After Liu Mian Tang leaves, Zi Yu often finds himself lost in thought by the crabapple tree. When Shi Xue Ji notices, she asks if he likes the flowers. He doesn’t deny it and reminisces about a crabapple tree in Yangshan, hinting at fond memories of a certain girl.

In the past, Zi Yu had to tread carefully due to his status, but now as the emperor, he feels more at ease. He invites Liu Mian Tang to enjoy the night view and play games, even giving her flowers. Cui Xing Zhou feels uneasy watching this but can only endure it, returning to the Huai Yang Prince’s residence where he writes the character for "endure" on a piece of paper as a reminder.

When Zi Yu visits the Empress Dowager, she eagerly pushes him to take a consort and praises Shi Xue Ji. He doesn’t give her a definite answer, and when she suggests that Shi Xue Ji move into the former queen's quarters, he becomes anxious, insisting that it needs to be discussed with the Ministry of Rites.

During this meeting, the Empress Dowager brings up a significant proposal: to betroth Princess Wu Hua to Cui Xing Zhou. Zi Yu calculates the implications—if the princess, with her noble status, became Cui Xing Zhou's wife, his influence would grow even stronger. He hasn’t figured out how to handle Cui Xing Zhou yet, so he cannot allow such support for him. He responds that he has no objections as long as Princess Wu Hua is willing. The Empress Dowager, pleased, decides to arrange for the princess to meet Zi Yu during the spring hunt.
