Episode 27 recap: Cui Xing Zhou Personally Talks to Liu Mian Tang About the Escort Business
In this episode, Cui Xing Zhou finds himself with some free time and decides to check in on Liu Mian Tang's recent happenings. He learns that her grandfather is considering selling the escort agency, which piques his interest. He instructs his subordinates to keep a close eye on her and secretly bribes the cook caring for her, telling her that Liu Mian Tang can ask for anything she wants to eat.
When Liu Mian Tang mentions her craving for Wujiang vinegar, a specialty from Qingzhou, Cui Xing Zhou wastes no time. He sends someone to fetch it and personally delivers it to her grandmother. Upon receiving the vinegar, Liu Mian Tang feels suspicious; after all, this is a product unique to Qingzhou. To test the waters, she intentionally asks her grandmother to prepare roast goose the next day.
Cui Xing Zhou, eager to make her smile, immediately takes action. He borrows a prized black-feathered goose from the Northern Zhou royal palace just for this occasion. That evening, the family gathers around the table to enjoy the succulent roast goose, praising its flavor. Liu Mian Tang’s aunt curiously asks about the cost, and her grandmother is astonished to reveal it only cost a hundred wen.
Liu Mian Tang’s grandfather, well-acquainted with the value of such delicacies from his travels, is shocked. Learning the truth, he plans to buy another goose the next day, unaware that Cui Xing Zhou has quietly "borrowed" another one.
Realizing what's going on, Liu Mian Tang approaches the "goose seller," only to find it’s Cui Xing Zhou's shadow guard. She promptly pays the price difference and instructs the guard to relay a message to Cui Xing Zhou: now that they've parted ways, he should not pursue her any further.
In private, Liu Mian Tang uses her savings to buy the escort agency, planning to run it herself. That night, she shares her decision with her grandfather. While he praises her courage, he also reminds her that women eventually have to marry.
Meanwhile, the shadow guard reports back to Cui Xing Zhou, who is undeterred. He learns the reopening date of the agency and shows up in person. Anticipating his arrival, Liu Mian Tang deliberately puts on a show with her cousin, calling him "husband" to dissuade Cui Xing Zhou. This tactic works, leaving him brooding for days, as even the mention of "marriage" gives him a headache.
However, Cui Xing Zhou is not one to give up easily. After discovering the truth about Liu Mian Tang’s "husband," he devises a new plan and personally requests to escort goods himself. Reluctantly, Liu Mian Tang takes the job. During the day, they stroll through the market, where Cui Xing Zhou insists on buying her candied hawthorn, reminiscent of their past in Qingzhou.
Though Liu Mian Tang feigns disdain, she can't help but feel nostalgic. In the afternoon, on a whim, Cui Xing Zhou rides out with her to the outskirts. At the border, he proposes they reconcile once more. Liu Mian Tang, however, rides past the boundary marker, demonstrating through her actions that their lives are now too different. She seeks freedom, while Cui Xing Zhou, as a hostage, bears heavy responsibilities.
Yet, Cui Xing Zhou follows closely behind, determined to prove his commitment, disregarding all constraints.
