Episode 4 recap: The Divorce Turmoil of Cheng Peng Fei and Jia Dai Yu
In Episode 4, set in June 1979, newlyweds Jia Dai Yu and Cheng Peng Fei celebrate with candy at the hospital. Unaccustomed to high heels, Jia Dai Yu twists her ankle, prompting Cheng Peng Fei to quickly offer her a pair of slippers he had prepared. Outside the hospital, they unexpectedly run into Wu Da Ge, who drives for their boss. Jia Dai Yu, still resentful of Cheng Peng Fei's past betrayal, switches back to her high heels and approaches him, delivering a pointed remark before walking away.
Meanwhile, the mothers attend an educational seminar and return with an overwhelming amount of educational materials and health products, ruining their summer plans and casting a shadow over their lives. Cheng Peng Fei, appalled by the poorly printed materials and unbranded health products, firmly opposes Jia Dai Yu's choices. His friend, Yang Songbai, is also displeased when he sees Hu Yue bringing back so many items, leading to a heated argument between the two over finances.
As the couple's arguments intensify regarding their child's future, both say hurtful things in a moment of anger. Jia Dai Yu storms off, declaring she wants a divorce. Cheng Ya Ya witnesses the scene and hurriedly informs Cheng Miao Miao, who worries about Cheng Peng Fei's feelings and quickly takes him home. Meanwhile, a furious Jia Dai Yu seeks solace in alcohol with Niu Ling Ling, who is still trying to calm her down when Hu Yue arrives.
Cheng Miao Miao, holding two bottles of alcohol, approaches Cheng Peng Fei, encouraging him to drink and share his feelings, promising to stand up for him if he feels wronged. After downing a bottle, Cheng Peng Fei becomes increasingly agitated, while Cheng Miao Miao makes it clear she is on his side, eager to support him in a potential divorce.
Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, Cheng Ya Ya quickly pulls Cheng Miao Miao away to talk sense into her. Just then, the sounds of Jia Dai Yu, Hu Yue, and Niu Ling Ling drunkenly singing fill the yard, leaving both Cheng Ya Ya and Cheng Miao Miao stunned.
Drunk, Cheng Peng Fei and Jia Dai Yu were put back in bed by the others, while Hu Yue and Yang Song Bai began to argue at home. Seeing that Cheng Miao Miao and Hu Qiu Min's parents were on the verge of divorce, Li Si couldn’t sit still and went to Niu Ling Ling to stir up trouble, suggesting that she should also divorce Li Da Hai.
While the divorce situation was still unclear, Cheng Miao Miao had already prepared a property division table and was loudly declaring her intent to separate from Cheng Peng Fei. When Jia Dai Yu found out, she insisted that they discuss how to divide their household. Initially hesitant, Cheng Miao Miao finally launched into a rant about Jia Dai Yu, and Cheng Peng Fei struggled to calm her down.
In a rush to clarify, he insisted he wasn't getting a divorce and had never said he wanted one! The parents had originally planned to gather and discuss educational issues, but suddenly Jia Dai Yu, Niu Ling Ling, and Hu Yue brought up the factory reforms, prompting the three of them to dash off to take care of business.
That day, Jia Dai Yu unexpectedly ran into her first love, Wu Da Ge, and invited him over for a visit. Now a party secretary, he was coming to her home. Before Wu Da Ge arrived, Jia Dai Yu hurriedly put on an elegant display, and when Cheng Peng Fei returned home midway, he could only support her with his presence.
Due to past events, Wu Da Ge had always felt guilty towards Jia Dai Yu, but she graciously noted that at their age, dwelling on the past held little meaning. The two shared a smile, burying the hatchet.
