Episode 17 recap: Investigation into Drug-Related Deaths by the Task Force

In episode 17, Gu Yi Ran works late into the night, meticulously examining key evidence in the drug-related case and confirming that the substance involved is a drug called “Snow Angel.” Meanwhile, Zheng Bei continues his search for the source of the drug but comes up empty. After informing Gu Yi Ran of his findings, he learns that Gu Yi Ran is moving that night.

Without hesitation, Zheng Bei takes his sister and Zhao Xiao Guang to help. Upon arriving at the new place, everyone finds it odd that the house looks like it’s already been lived in, with furniture and personal items all in place. One room is locked, and Zhao Xiao Guang and Zheng Nan are curious to find out what’s inside, but Gu Yi Ran adamantly refuses to let them in.

This raises suspicions in Zheng Bei’s mind, especially recalling Gu Yi Ran's earlier claim about going to Guangzhou to visit his parents, only to suddenly appear in Halan to assist with the case. Zheng Bei starts to wonder if Gu Yi Ran is hiding some secret mission. When he tries to pry for information, Gu Yi Ran remains tight-lipped and even advises him to focus on his own life instead of always scrutinizing others.

The next morning, the task force visits the hospital to see the family of the drug-related victim. Seeing the elderly man’s partner sitting alone downstairs, clutching a photograph, weighs heavily on everyone’s hearts. Back at the station, during a meeting, Zheng Bei speculates that the drug trafficking gang is part of a larger plan, using lightbulbs to quickly distribute drugs without leaving a trace. The notorious drug lord, Xiao Ma, proves to be a cunning adversary.

Zhao Xiao Guang optimistically notes that they’ve at least caught some small-time players, which might lead them to the bigger fish. However, Zheng Bei understands that with the drugs already circulating and lives lost, no amount of regret can bring back the deceased. Frustrated, he sits in the courtyard lost in thought. Gu Yi Ran, sensing his mood, approaches to offer some words of encouragement and shares a piece of gum, reminding him not to be too hard on himself.

Meanwhile, Ding Guo Zhu encounters the frightening face of a drug user while going downstairs, nearly scaring him to death. Ding Ma arrives just in time, splashing a bucket of water on the user to wake him up while also giving her son a stern talking-to. Feeling humiliated, Ding Guo Zhu hides in the bathroom to cry. Seeing this, Gu Yi Ran offers to help him build his courage.

That evening, while Gu Yi Ran is busy organizing clues, Zheng Nan unexpectedly drops by with flowers and dinner, asking for help translating the content of a video tape. Gu Yi Ran feels awkward and quickly retreats to call Zheng Bei for help. As soon as Zhao Xiao Guang hears this, he drops what he’s doing and rushes over to “rescue” Gu Yi Ran. Seizing the moment, Gu Yi Ran proposes to teach Zhao Xiao Guang Cantonese to help him impress Zheng Nan.

The following morning, the sounds of Gu Yi Ran teaching Zhao Xiao Guang Cantonese fill the yard. Just then, Ding Guo Zhu rushes in with good news: the drug user has provided a lead on the lightbulbs. Gu Yi Ran takes the opportunity to give Ding Guo Zhu a box of ghost story tapes to practice his courage with later that night.

The interrogation of the lightbulb supplier does not go smoothly; they only know about training and payment, with no other information. Though Zheng Bei finds it frustrating, he remains determined to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, after work, Gu Yi Ran continues to secretly follow Li Wen Long to gather more clues.

This case feels like a war without gunfire, with everyone on high alert, striving to unveil the truths hidden behind layers of mystery.
