Episode 18 recap: Gu Yi Ran's Dangerous Pursuit of Li Wen Long
In Episode 18, early in the morning, Gu Yi Ran drags his exhausted self into the task force, looking like he hasn't slept at all. He claims he stayed up all night reading reports, but Zheng Bei sees right through his lie. Meanwhile, Zhao Xiao Guang sneaks into a barbershop with snacks, only to find Zheng Nan cutting a child's hair. He starts humming a Cantonese song and pretends he wants to check in on Hua Zhou, but Zheng Nan sees through his little act and brushes him off.
Soon after, a police raid goes awry and Gu Yi Ran ends up being "invited" to the station. Zheng Bei rushes over and explains that Gu Yi Ran simply went to the wrong place; the vice squad mistook him for a "customer." To smooth things over, Zheng Bei promises a week of free chicken legs, successfully keeping the squad leader quiet.
As Zheng Bei leaves, he bumps into Zhao Xiao Guang, who is looking for his mother with a little boy. After some small talk, Zheng Bei pretends to be calm, saying he's bringing Gu Yi Ran to learn, while he secretly feels anxious.
On their way home, Zheng Bei presses Gu Yi Ran about what he was doing at that place. Gu Yi Ran is evasive, but his mind is on Li Wen Long. Coincidentally, Li Wen Long's car passes by and he witnesses the scene of Gu Yi Ran being "taught a lesson" by Zheng Bei, a complex look crossing his face.
It turns out Li Wen Long had noticed he was being followed and intentionally evaded Gu Yi Ran, leaving him empty-handed. On a rainy night, Gu Yi Ran follows Li Wen Long but ends up getting subdued. Ding Guo Zhu happens to pass by and tries to intervene, but is ambushed by men in black, allowing Li Wen Long to escape. Gu Yi Ran rushes Ding Guo Zhu to the hospital.
In the hospital, Gu Yi Ran confides in Zheng Bei and Ding Guo Zhu. He reveals that due to his sister's involvement with drugs, he and his father worked with the police to crack a major case. However, his father mysteriously disappeared while he was abroad, possibly linked to Li Wen Long. Ding Guo Zhu and Zheng Bei decide to help Gu Yi Ran find the truth.
During the interrogation of Li Wen Long, he deflects every accusation, and even an asthma attack can't dampen his arrogance. The task force searches through old files but can't find direct evidence to pin anything on him. Meanwhile, Ding Guo Zhu, celebrated for his bravery after getting injured, enjoys a warm family atmosphere that makes Gu Yi Ran envious. Zheng Bei silently vows that Gu Yi Ran's future home will also be his.
Zheng Bei supports Gu Yi Ran not just with words but also with actions, helping him move back into his home. The two begin living together again. Gu Yi Ran is grateful for Zheng Bei's care and responsibility, while Zhao Xiao Guang stubbornly continues to learn Cantonese, hoping to make Zheng Nan smile, despite his amusingly poor pronunciation.
As Li Wen Long's detention period draws to a close, Gu Yi Ran worries he might escape justice. Based on clues, Zheng Bei suspects that the shadow from the rainy night was Jiang Xiao Hai and decides to test this the next day. Gu Yi Ran enjoys the long-lost warmth of family at Zheng's home while secretly planning to uncover the mystery behind his father's disappearance and seek justice for his family.
All of this will slowly unfold in the days to come.
